The Boruto series started with a captivating prologue that hinted at what was to come. Right away, the author showed us a bleak future where the ninja world was in ruins, with only Boruto Uzumaki and Kawaki surviving. Perhaps the biggest surprise was learning that the era of ninjas was over.
Fans were initially confused about what happened during this period. However, Kishimoto has gradually shared details explaining the events that devastated the ninja world. Ultimately, this leads to the decline of the Shinobi era in Boruto, with Kawaki playing a central role in these changes.
The Age Of Shinobi Is Set To End In Naruto
The Greatest Time Period Is Finally Ending
For over a thousand years in the world of Naruto, shinobi have existed, their origins stretching back to the Sage of Six Paths. This sage was the son of Kaguya Otsutsuki, a powerful being from another planet who came to Earth and gained immense power by consuming a special fruit. Unlike others of her kind who sought to destroy and conquer, Kaguya chose to rule Earth and was even worshipped for a time. However, her sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, eventually rebelled against her cruelty and defeated her after she merged with a massive tree, becoming the Ten-Tails. Hagoromo then became the host of the Ten-Tails, and before he died, he split the beast’s chakra, creating the Nine-Tails.
Hagoromo had two sons, Indra and Asura, who are considered the ancestors of all ninja. Both inherited great power from their father. Over the centuries, the ninja grew in number and strength, largely because Hagoromo traveled the land sharing his unique energy, known as chakra and the Ninshu art.
Jump ahead over a thousand years in the Boruto series, and the ninja way of life is facing extinction. The very first chapter hints at this, showing Boruto and Kawaki battling on top of the Hokage monuments. Kawaki declares that the era of ninjas is finished, and Boruto, while disagreeing, acknowledges the changing times. At this point in the story, Boruto seems to be the last one who truly identifies as a ninja, while Kawaki doesn’t see himself that way at all.

It’s understandable that fans are curious about what happened to the shinobi. They were a powerful group, arguably the strongest on Earth, so their complete disappearance is puzzling. The key to understanding their fate seems to lie with the Shinju, who are now causing chaos in the world.
The Shinju Could End The Age Of Shinobi
They Are Still Growing In Boruto
The Shinju are formidable beings who currently serve as the primary villains in the Boruto storyline. Created by Code using the power of Claw Marks, they originated from the Ten Tails, which he infected and divided into more human-like forms. These Shinju then sought out sources of chakra, eventually gaining their own consciousness and unique personalities, surpassing their original instincts. While already incredibly powerful and intelligent, the Shinju are still young and are expected to grow even stronger and pose an even greater threat in the future.
The age of shinobi is over, Boruto. — Kawaki
Jura is the most powerful member of his group and is essentially the embodiment of the Ten-Tails. He’s even stronger than someone like Isshiki Otsutsuki, making him a significant danger. Currently, neither Boruto nor Kawaki could hope to win against him. However, Jura isn’t a threat unless provoked. If he continues to grow stronger, he has the potential to destroy the entire world. It’s very possible that Jura will ultimately be the one to end the age of shinobi and conquer all five great nations on his own.
Kawaki Will Attempt To Kill Boruto In The Chaos
Kawaki Vs Boruto Will Happen In A Destroyed Ninja World
Many fans immediately suspect Kawaki of wanting to destroy the ninja world, but he actually has little reason to do so. His current enemy is the Otsutsuki clan, and he wants to eliminate them completely. He even wants to kill Boruto, as Boruto is also connected to the Otsutsuki. Destroying the ninja world wouldn’t benefit Kawaki at all; instead, the real threat might be Jura, who has the potential to cause widespread destruction.
I am still a shinobi! — Boruto Uzumaki
Jura and his group are driven by their own impulses and completely disregard the ninja world. They wouldn’t hesitate to destroy a ninja village, and have already attacked places like Matsuri. Their increasing desire for knowledge, combined with their emotional nature, makes them a serious threat to all ninja.
This connects directly to the conflict between Boruto and Kawaki, and explains why Kawaki believes the era of ninjas is coming to an end. The truth is, if the age of shinobi truly ends, Boruto and Kawaki might be powerless to prevent it. Kawaki would likely use the resulting chaos as an opportunity to finally defeat Boruto, whom he sees as a threat due to Boruto’s Otsutsuki powers. He believes eliminating Boruto is necessary to protect the Seventh Hokage, and he’s determined to do so, even in a world without ninjas.
It’s certain the ninja world won’t disappear. Both Boruto and Kawaki will live, and most of the new generation will as well. Naruto and Sasuke will return, helping to rebuild the ninja world, which has endured for centuries. While the situation might initially worry fans, it’s clear that ninjas will ultimately prevail.
