Amongst Naruto’s most distinctive skills lies his command over the powers of the Nine-Tailed Beast. With malevolent energy coursing through him, he stands poised to obliterate his adversaries. It is common knowledge that Naruto serves as the Jinchūriki, or the vessel, for the formidable and lethal Nine-Tails. Similar to Naruto, there are eight other ninjas who carry this role, each of them the host for one of the potent and destructive Tailed Beasts.

In the Ninja realm, their lives are challenging, and they face exclusion from the villages. Yet, these individuals, known as Jinchūriki, play a crucial role in preserving the ninja world. Here’s an explanation of what Jinchūriki do within Naruto’s storyline and why they exist: They serve both as valuable military assets and as a continuation of Shinobi history.

The Origin of Jinchūriki

An Important Element of Shinobi History

A millennium ago, a formidable beast known as the Ten Tails wreaked havoc across the globe, causing destruction and claiming many lives. It wasn’t until the twin brothers Hagoromo and Hamura Ōtsutsuki joined forces to confront this monstrous menace that it was finally defeated. Instead of annihilating the beast, they opted to seal it within Hagoromo, thus making him the world’s first Jinchūriki. With the power of the Ten Tails residing within him, Hagoromo demonstrated godlike abilities and performed remarkable feats that brought peace to the world. Over time, his selfless deeds earned him the title of the Sage of the Six Paths.

You’re not the monster fox anymore. You’re one of my teammates from Konoha… Kurama.

Over time, he came to understand that upon his death, the 10 Tails would once more be unleashed on the world, causing devastation. To prevent this, he divided the 10 Tails into nine separate entities called Tailed Beasts, each possessing tails ranging from one to nine in number. These creatures regarded him as their father figure, and before his final moments, he expressed a desire for them to live contentedly and preserve his legacy of tranquility whenever they were sealed within another Shinobi at future times.

For decades, people have been harnessing the power of nine mythical creatures, the Tailed Beasts, for selfish purposes like greed and conflict. This changed when secret villages were founded, leading to an agreement that divided these beasts among the villages. Each village then chose a resident to serve as the host for a Tailed Beast. A unique ceremony transforms a child into a host, and often for protection, they are related to the village’s leader, or Kage. Regrettably, life for each Jinchūriki tends to be challenging.

The Life of a Jinchuriki

Great Power Alongside Great Suffering

Since these Shinobi are linked to monstrous creatures that have wreaked havoc worldwide, they’re frequently subjected to harsh treatment by the general populace. They’re shunned and mistreated because people view them as embodiments of the tailed beasts they host. Their humanity and personal feelings are often disregarded, and they’re seen primarily as dangerous entities. This is a life that both Naruto Uzumaki, our series protagonist, and his companion Gaara have experienced.

Once a Jinchuriki builds up their powers in tandem with their tail beast, they can freely tap into that power, making them among the most formidable ninjas within their villages. For instance, Gaara was considered invulnerable due to his lifetime spent untouched by any enemy attack. Nonetheless, it’s not always the case that being a Jinchuriki entails hardship. Some Jinchuriki have earned acceptance and even respect from the villages over time.

At a tender age, Yagura, the Shield of the Three-Tails, assumed the position of the village’s Kag. Similarly, Gaara, the Shield of the One Tail, was appointed as the Kage at 16 and was highly revered for his exceptional leadership skills. Killer Bee, the Shield of the Eight Tails, gained immense love and respect in his village, making him a cherished public figure. Lastly, Naruto Uzumaki, rather than just being the hero of the Fourth Great Ninja War, fulfilled his childhood aspiration by becoming the seventh Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village. His actions earned him the affection, esteem, and adoration of the villagers.
