This article contains spoilers from the Naruto series.
Masashi Kishimoto‘s Naruto is known for its fantastic characters, and fans have consistently praised them throughout the series. Kishimoto excels at creating compelling personalities, and he’s at his best when writing about the Uchiha clan within the Naruto universe.
Itachi Uchiha has always been a fan favorite, even though he initially seemed like a villain. What really cemented people’s love for him was learning about his selfless motivations later on. It was a real shame he didn’t get to stick around for very long, as he was removed from the story relatively early, which left many fans feeling disappointed. But it sounds like we might see him again! The creator, Kishimoto, has hinted at a possible return for Itachi, which is exciting news.
Masashi Kishimoto Wants To Bring Back Itachi Uchiha In A New Side Story
Since Naruto finished, Masashi Kishimoto has worked on several projects, including the Naruto Gaiden mini-series and ongoing supervision of Boruto. But one of his most recent and interesting endeavors was a special, standalone story featuring Minato, released in 2023 following the Naruto Global Popularity Poll.
We all experience life through the lens of what we know and what we’re aware of – that’s what we consider real. But our knowledge and perceptions are always subjective. What feels real to one person might seem like an illusion to another. In a way, we’re all living within our own personal worlds of imagination. — Itachi Uchiha
Recently, Kishimoto mentioned he’d like to write a short story focusing on Itachi Uchiha. Since Itachi is a very popular character with fans, bringing him back in this way would be a fantastic move for the Naruto series.
When Kishimoto first spoke about Itachi, he hadn’t fully planned out the character’s future role. However, he was already considering possibilities, and fans might eventually see this popular Uchiha return in a special, standalone story.
Here’s what Kishimoto had to say about Itachi’s return:
I’m considering requests for other characters, but I’m taking my time to decide. I’m actually using a fan ranking to help me – Minato was the most popular, followed by Itachi. I say that last part with a bit of a laugh, but you never know what might happen! – Masashi Kishimoto
Kishimoto Will Eventually Draw New Stories
Besides Itachi Uchiha’s story, Masashi Kishimoto is still planning future manga projects. He’s mentioned wanting to expand the Naruto universe with either a sequel or prequel, or even create an entirely new series.
He originally intended to create another lengthy manga series, but his attempt with Samurai 8 wasn’t successful. Since then, Kishimoto has been focusing on spending time with his family. While he’s expressed interest in returning to manga creation, he hasn’t announced when he might start a new project.
Many fans are hoping Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of Naruto, will revisit the original series, but not through Boruto, which hasn’t been well-received. They believe there’s still a lot of untapped potential in the Naruto universe, particularly in the years between the end of the original series and the start of Boruto.
Itachi Uchiha’s Story Will Breathe New Life Into The Naruto Franchise
It appears Kishimoto is planning to release short stories focusing on a few popular characters, including Itachi Uchiha, Sakura Haruno, Naruto Uzumaki, and Sasuke Uchiha.
Honestly, don’t bother judging me by what you think you see. You probably figured I’d be all calm and collected, and that was a mistake. And you keep going on and on about my clan, focusing on their power…but you completely overlooked my strength. That’s why you’re in this position now, begging for mercy. It’s a classic error, really. — Itachi Uchiha, Naruto
If the author, Kishimoto, follows through on his promise, we might see these characters explored in much more depth. However, it’s not certain whether he’ll actually write short stories for every character who ranked in the top 10 of the fan popularity poll.
It seems likely we’ll eventually see a story focused on Itachi. Many fans believe this could revitalize the Naruto series, which has suffered a bit with the focus on Boruto. A one-shot story about Itachi could be exactly what the franchise needs to start fresh.
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is the continuation of the Boruto story, created by Mikio Ikemoto with supervision from Masashi Kishimoto. The series picks up three years after the events of the Omnipotence arc and follows Boruto Uzumaki as he works to protect the world, alongside his brother Kawaki. Chapter 29 is scheduled to be released on December 18, 2025, at 10 AM EST / 3 PM UTC. Fans can read it for free on the Manga Plus and Shonen Jump apps.
