Natasha Ofili Discusses Being the First Black Deaf Woman to Appear in a Video Game

As a fan of Natasha Ofili‘s remarkable journey, I find myself utterly inspired by her resilience and determination. From fashion design to acting and breaking barriers left and right, she has truly set the bar high for aspiring actors, especially those from underrepresented communities.

In a pivotal role, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales functioned significantly when it debuted, acting as a transitional link between its predecessor and the upcoming sequel. This spin-off not only offered fans their first comprehensive look at Insomniac Games’ interpretation of the main character, but it was also one of the games launched alongside the PS5. Similar to Marvel’s Spider-Man, this game garnered impressive critical acclaim and further developed the in-game world and mythos. Additionally, Miles’ Deaf love interest Hailey Cooper, portrayed by actress Natasha Ofili, who is also Deaf, was introduced in the game for the first time.

More recently, Natasha Ofili had a chat about her professional journey so far in an interview with Game Rant (through American Sign Language interpretation). In this conversation, she shared her accomplishment of being the inaugural Black and Deaf woman to star in a video game, specifically Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales. She also spoke about how she consistently strives to reach even greater heights with each new milestone. Furthermore, she reflected on the transformation within the industry since her beginnings and highlighted areas where she believes further advancements are necessary.

Natasha Ofili on Consistently Raising the Bar

Originally a fashion designer, Natasha Ofili’s professional journey has veered off in unforeseen directions. Once she embarked on acting, she hasn’t hesitated and has found herself part of notable productions such as Netflix’s “The Politician” and the Marvel’s Spider-Man series. Her career trajectory is steadily ascending, and she aims for her achievements to motivate the future crop of Black and Deaf actors.

I find myself constantly reaching for greater heights with everything I accomplish as an actor, feeling a sense of pride in the unique gifts I bring to my craft. I aspire that my work resonates with Black, brown, Deaf, and hard-of-hearing young people, particularly those from the Black and brown communities, instilling within them the belief that they too can achieve greatness. My goal is to break down barriers and erase stigmas, finding joy in my persistence and refusing to give up on this mission.

Natasha Ofili Says Work Still Needs to Be Done to Raise the Profile of Deaf Talent

In 2024, Ofili received the Game Accessibility Conference Award for Best Representation, thanks to her portrayal of Hailey Cooper. With more than five years in the industry, she’s noticed progress regarding representation visibility but emphasizes that there is still room for improvement, especially in giving Deaf individuals opportunities as directors instead of just actors.

As a passionate advocate, I can confidently say that I’ve witnessed some progress. I’ve noticed increased visibility of representation, which is truly heartening. Yet, there remains room for improvement. I firmly believe we should strive to amplify the voices and talents of Deaf individuals not just on-screen, but also behind the scenes. This could mean more Deaf writers, producers, decision-makers, and executive producers contributing to the narrative.

There’s a lot more to look forward to from Ofili, whose unbridled enthusiasm and contagious positivity for the industry is certain to put a smile on anyone’s face. At present, she’s engaged in a collaboration with the band Coldplay, having previously worked with them. It appears that she may once again play Hailey in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, although this is merely speculation at this point. Regardless, her fans can anticipate her consistently pushing the boundaries and rising above each time.
