HEADS UP: This critique unveils key plot points from episode 6 of Zenshu’s season 1, titled “Change,” which is currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll.

The outlook for the Last Town appeared bleak following the fifth installment of Zenshu. When Natsuko impulsively ordered her hand-drawn samurai to obliterate a nest of Void eggs, they regrouped into an indomitable slime, jeopardizing not only Natsuko but also her allies. The sixth episode of Zenshu’s season 1, titled “Change,” delves into the repercussions of Natsuko’s hasty decisions.

Episode 6 skillfully combines intense drama and thrilling action. Some parts explore character relationships more intricately than we saw in season 1. The episode ends with an unexpected fight, leaving fans eager to discover the outcome of the main personalities in “A Tale of Perishing”.

Natsuko F’d Around – Now She Finds Out

In the beginning of Episode 6, we find a scene from “A Tale of Perishing” where the Nine Soldiers function seamlessly to vanquish a formidable Void, offering a stark contrast to the disorganized communication that ended episode 5 on a suspenseful precipice. Thankfully, none of the soldiers were lost following Natsuko’s accidental release of a widespread Void sludge. Regrettably, this incident marks the end of the final remnant of Soul Future.

The gooey Abyss seeped past the defenses of the Final Town, prompting an immediate evacuation by all its inhabitants. Subsequently, the Abyss adhered to the tower safeguarding the Final Town’s future essence. Following this attachment, the Abyss transformed into a gigantic cocoon, sheltering the Final Town’s deadliest foe ever. When the cocoon bursts open, the newly emerged Abyss will have a direct route to a Soul Future banquet.

Natsuko’s response to this news seems unusually calm, as if it were no big deal. Even though she made a mistake, she just moves on and plans to create something new to fix it. Why get so upset? In the end, Luke loses his temper. He seizes the carefree animator and scolds her harshly, “You could have died! It’s a miracle you didn’t. Do you realize what you put everyone through?” Luke’s outburst leaves everyone feeling chilled to the bone. Natsuko appears oblivious to how her actions impact others.

Luke and Justice Share a Revealing Conversation

Following his outburst towards Natsuko, Luke pays respects at the graves of those who perished due to the Voids. By chance, Justice encounters Luke there, and for the first time in years, they engage in a candid dialogue. This setting showcases Justice and Luke as mirrors of each other. While Justice has come to terms with his losses, this acceptance leads him towards a sense of resignation that borders on nihilism. Conversely, Luke is stubbornly persistent about the Soul Future; he refuses to back down without a struggle. However, his determination is pushing him dangerously close to insanity.

The situation takes a sudden twist when Justice enquires about the well-being of the young one. Unbeknownst to Justice, he’s touched upon a delicate matter. Luke finds himself puzzled by Natsuko. She possesses an extraordinary ability; if only she had arrived sooner to protect his comrades. However, she also comes across as arrogant and thoughtless, showing little concern for others. Moreover, there seems to be some mysterious connection between Natsuko and Justice. Hang on, why should Luke be concerned about this!? It turns out that Luke is dealing with something personal.

No One Does It Alone (Including Natsuko)

The second act commences as a troubled Natsuko is found at the local tavern, jotting down ideas over drinks and erasing her recent drawings. Just then, a robot named QJ arrives, and its projector flashes a distressing image – Natsuko lying in bed with a dark purple mark on her arm. The magical beings Memerun and Unio attempt to heal the wound, leaving Natsuko silent as QJ bids her farewell with serious words.

Of all the great things you’ve done, Miss. Natsuko, none were by you alone.

During their next gathering, Natsuko reluctantly goes along with her fellow soldiers’ ideas, but in a manner distinctively hers – displaying a hint of dry arrogance that leaves Unio, QJ, and Luke infuriated. This behavior leads these colleagues to believe she has disregarded their cautions, but compassionate Memerun steps in to support Natsuko, suggesting her actions should be interpreted more sympathetically.

In a touching moment, Memerun and Natsuko engage in a heartfelt interaction that acknowledges Natsuko’s humanity, not just an enigma shrouded in mystery. The elven warrior, with centuries of life under her belt, greets Natsuko empathetically. Recognizing Natsuko’s apprehension about losing those dear to her, Memerun presents a different approach. Instead of tackling her fears with overly cautious vigilance, Natsuko can lean on her companions for support. She doesn’t have to confront her anxieties alone.

An Unremarkable Drawing Saves the Last Town

With everyone understanding the strategy, the brave heroes of the Last Town devise a plan to destroy the Chrysalis Void. QJ will entice the creature from its chrysalis using a fragment of the Soul Future. Simultaneously, Unio and Luke will keep it occupied with their assaults. Meanwhile, Memerun will use her magical abilities to freeze the Void. Last but not least, Natsuko will deliver the final blow. The ensuing battle promises to be a matter of life or death, as Elder Baobab’s protective shield around the Soul Future serves as their sole source of protection during the fight.

It appears that the team’s strategy didn’t go as planned, unfortunately. A colossal worm-like creature burst from its shell, swiftly devouring QJ and Memerun. This catastrophic event triggered a powerful shockwave that weakened the tower, causing Luke and Unio to tumble down. To add to their misfortune, Unio’s horn became stuck in the ground when it was jammed into the pavement, making his transformation abilities useless.

In the midst of turmoil, Natsuko finds herself with no other option than to intervene. Instead of conjuring a mystical warrior, sports legend, or wrestler, Natsuko decides on a simpler solution: she constructs a staircase. This magical staircase spirals around the Soul Future’s towers, offering Luke and Unio a way to pursue the Void. Though straightforward, this staircase proves useful. However, Natsuko requires one more heroic figure to help Luke and Unio ascend toward their victory.

As Natsuko strains to catch sight of Unio and Luke climbing her stairs, a difficult hurdle arises. Yet, unexpectedly, Justice appears on the scene. With his wings wounded, this handicapped dragon lifts Natsuko’s desk aloft, aiding in preventing Unio and Luke from falling behind. This is crucial since the Void starts tearing apart Baobab’s protective shield, which could cause trouble.

In one of Zenshu’s most precarious instances, tension escalates as it seems The Last Town might be facing its demise. However, just when all hope appears lost, QJ and Memerun suddenly appear from the Mouth of the Void, discovering its vulnerability. With a powerful blow from Unio, Luke is hurled skyward and swiftly slices the Void in two! Luke’s victory is hard-won and a sight to behold.

After the conflict has ended, Luke and Justice tidy up remaining issues. Now that Luke is aware of Justice’s condition, the muscular dragon confesses why he never revealed his wound to his trusted companion. The two make amends and exchange a powerful fist bump, healing one of the Nine Soldiers’ most profound rifts. It seems the team is on its way back to its original strength.
