As someone who’s been following gaming news for the better part of three decades now, I can confidently say that I’ve seen it all – from game-breaking bugs to controversial storylines, and everything in between. But what never ceases to amaze me is the sheer resilience of certain vocal minorities who seem to hold onto their grudges for years, even decades!
Following an enjoyable week at The Game Awards, brimming with discussions on winners and exciting revelations, the gaming community finds itself in a post-event haze, during which a vocal segment expresses opinions about trivial matters.
In this case, the tension seems to be stemming from unhappy team members who worked on a previous game, transferring their problems to a new project.
It’s been four years since “The Last Of Us Part II” was released, and based on the feedback in the “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet” trailer on YouTube, it appears that some fans haven’t moved on from it yet.
Driven by unfounded dislike towards Neil Druckmann and the supposed lack of satisfying endings for female characters, a band of online critics chose to post disrespectful remarks aimed at actress Tati Gabrielle.
In response, the team chose to temporarily turn off commenting on the video. However, comments previously posted are still visible on the PlayStation version of the video. Some enthusiasts have even suggested that those comments could use a tidying up as well.
Tati Gabrielle makes her video game acting debut as Jordan Mun in “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.” Although this is her first foray into video games, she has previously worked with Naughty Dog. In the live-action adaptation of Uncharted, she played Jo Braddock, and she will portray Nora in the upcoming second season of HBO’s “The Last Of Us.
Based on the Intergalactic trailer, it appears that Jordan Mun embodies a true tough-guy persona, and the game seems to revolve around an exciting atmosphere.
Same Old Song And Dance
Expressing strong disapproval towards female characters in video games isn’t a recent phenomenon, but it’s become more passionate recently. This is because conversations beyond the gaming industry about topics such as diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) or being ‘woke’ have gained traction.
Today, many video game trailers showcasing female protagonists often face some criticism, but it seems that the reasons for this dissent are still not clearly defined.
Apart from Intergalactic, another game that drew significant attention following The Game Awards was The Witcher 4 by CD Projekt Red. This studio faced an unusual wave of criticism after their release of Cyberpunk 2077. The main character of The Witcher 4, Ciri, was particularly subject to backlash regarding her appearance.
The response to this has led to quite a bit of perplexity amongst gamers who aren’t deeply entrenched in ideological extremes, given that the character appears as a traditionally appealing woman, featuring graphical quality surpassing that seen in The Witcher 3.
Based on the booming financial performance of the gaming industry in recent times, it appears that the cry of “go woke, go broke” has yet to impact the financial statements; however, this doesn’t diminish the irritation experienced by developers and actors who invest deeply in game development.
