Summary
- NCIS: Origins season 2 will feature an exciting Gibbs storyline
- Gibbs’s second wife, Diane, will play a significant role in season 2
- Showrunners plan to honor NCIS canon while exploring Gibbs and Diane’s relationship in the prequel.
NCIS: Origins delves into the past of the iconic character, Young Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell), as he serves at the NIS Camp Pendleton office. I’m appreciating learning more about this character’s backstory set in the 1990s. Additionally, I, along with many other fans, enjoyed Mark Harmon’s appearance in the first episode, and I believe his poignant narration enhances the prequel series nicely.
The final episode of NCIS: Origins Season 1 aired on Monday, the 28th of April, 2025, following an engaging run of 18 episodes. With Mark Harmon’s Gibbs character being written off in NCIS Season 19, it’s been refreshing to witness a younger counterpart with a bright future ahead. The insights into the plans for NCIS: Origins Season 2 have only heightened my curiosity, and I’m particularly eager to follow one specific storyline.
NCIS: Origins Season 2 Will Feature One Particularly Exciting Gibbs Storyline

During a conversation with Deadline towards the end of April 2025, showrunners Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North discussed the upcoming season 2 of NCIS: Origins. According to North, here’s what we can anticipate from the new season.
“But as far as where we’re taking the story, it’s open. It’s an open runway.”
Intriguingly vague but tantalizing hints have been dropped, implying an enthralling narrative is on the horizon, and I’m confident I’m not alone among fans eagerly awaiting its revelation. The finale of NCIS: Origins season 1 saw Special Agent Gibbs encounter a real estate agent named Diane (Kathleen Kenny), whom fans recall as his second wife. This encounter has fans of the long-running NCIS series intrigued, given that Diane plays a significant role in Gibbs’ life moving forward. It appears there may be wedding bells for Gibbs and Diane in NCIS: Origins season 2, and I can hardly contain my excitement about this potential development. When questioned about this possible plotline, Monreal commented:
In this adaptation, we strive to remain faithful to the essence and originality of “NCIS“, and that’s exactly what we’re aiming for here. As a result, they will indeed get married, and we’ll follow where their story leads us. However, these significant moments in the series, which serve as key milestones for us, are often quite difficult to handle. Our task is to weave all our narratives around this major event.
It’d be wonderful if Harmon ever took on the role of Gibbs on NCIS, but Austin Stowell delivers a nuanced and impactful portrayal as young Gibbs. I believe it’s an intriguing concept to explore his relationship with Diane, especially since NCIS fans are aware that her character meets a tragic fate. It’ll be engaging to see NCIS: Origins shed light on their untold story.
Similar to numerous characters on NCIS, season 22 and earlier installments, the character of Gibbs excels in his professional life but grapples with complexities in his personal realm. Given his enigma that keeps audiences guessing, it was a shrewd decision to base a prequel around him. The demise of Diane significantly impacted Gibbs, as she was his second wife who he lost following the tragic deaths of his first wife Shannon and their daughter Kelly. I eagerly anticipate uncovering more details about Diane and Gibbs’s relationship, particularly since they crossed paths during a difficult period in his life. One of my favorite moments was when Diane complimented Gibbs on having nice eyes, and I am excitedly waiting for further humorous instances like that in NCIS: Origins season 2.
What Happened To Gibbs’s Second Wife Diane Sterling On NCIS?

On the long-running CBS show NCIS, characters like Abby Sciuto (played by Pauley Perrette) have left, while others have met tragic ends. Moments like these are among the hardest to witness on the series. The demise of Gibbs’s second wife, Diane Sterling (portrayed by Melinda McGraw), is particularly heartbreaking, and her storyline’s resolution is as emotionally charged as that of Kate Todd (played by Sasha Alexander).
In NCIS Season 12, Episode 12 titled “Check,” the character Sergei Mishnev (Alex Veadov) fatally shoots Diane, leaving an emotionally charged scene for Gibbs who has already mourned Shannon’s death. However, in NCIS Season 16, Episode 24 ‘Daughters,’ Diane returns to Gibbs, seemingly as a ghostly apparition. Given that Gibbs typically presents himself as tough and composed, it’s both eerie and captivating to watch him interact with this ethereal figure.
Given that Gibbs has been married four times and gone through a lot of heartache, I, along with many others, are always intrigued to delve deeper into his personal background. My interest is particularly piqued by Diane in NCIS: Origins season 2. Naturally, considering the nature of the prequel series and the original show, it’s safe to assume that there will be challenges when it comes to Diane and Gibbs’s wedding.
