NES Games that Made Couch Co-op Feel like an Event

I always thought of Nintendo as more of a solo gaming company, especially with their online stuff being a bit spotty lately. But it’s funny, if you go back to the old days, playing with friends was all about being in the same room! And when I think about the NES, I remember a lot of games where playing co-op with someone felt like a really special experience.

The games offered a great mix of ways to play with others – sometimes competing against friends, and other times teaming up to achieve a common goal. That simple connection with another person – the excitement of playing together – made these games feel special, even more so than their graphics might suggest now.

Because these games are quite old, my personal enjoyment heavily influenced their ranking, though I also considered what critics generally thought of them.

10. Balloon Fight

Full of Hot Air

HAL Laboratory is best known for the popular Kirby games, but they also created Balloon Fight. It might not be a legendary title, but it was certainly a different, charming, and enjoyable game.

The game centers around carefully floating through the air, trying not to let monsters or obstacles burst your balloons. It’s challenging enough on your own, but playing with others is absolute chaos!

Picture this: four players scrambling to burst each other’s balloons while protecting their own. That was Balloon Fight – a fast-paced, chaotic game, particularly popular on the original NES. But don’t worry, not every cooperative game on this list is about competing against each other!

9. Tecmo Super Bowl

Hut, Hut, Hike!

Today, Tecmo Super Bowl might seem dated with its bright green fields, basic team colors, and simple sound effects. But when it was first released, it was groundbreaking. It remains a beloved classic, and people still enjoy playing updated versions of the game.

I’m really into this game because understanding the teams and the strengths of different players – like knowing which running backs and quarterbacks are best – makes a huge difference. I love being able to play through a whole season with my favorite team, but honestly, the best part is playing with friends and family on the couch. It’s way more fun battling it out against real people than playing against the computer!

If you enjoy sports, you probably spent countless hours playing Tecmo Super Bowl, completely absorbed in the game. The only reason it’s not ranked higher is simply that I don’t particularly like sports, and I prioritized other adventure games instead.

8. Gauntlet

Tabletop Adventures

I’ve never actually played a traditional game of Dungeons & Dragons with people in the same room, but I’ve always enjoyed games with similar role-playing aspects. Back in the days of the NES, Gauntlet was a perfect example of that.

The game originally appeared in arcades, but it soon became available on home consoles such as the NES. Best of all, it allowed you and your friends to team up and fight endless waves of monsters. Players could also select from different character classes, including a warrior, wizard, valkyrie, and elf.

The biggest problem with Gauntlet was that it could throw an overwhelming number of enemies at you, which was incredibly frustrating. However, it was best enjoyed as a cooperative game, especially during its initial release, making it a fun fantasy adventure to share with friends.

7. Super Dodge Ball

I don’t usually follow sports, but I’m a big fan of the Kunio-kun games. What makes them so enjoyable is their combination of colorful, cartoon-like characters, fast-paced action, and bright visuals. Super Dodge Ball is a particularly great example of a fun game to play with a friend.

Most people remember the simple rules of dodgeball from grade school, but Super Dodge Ball takes the game to a whole new level. Each character has unique abilities and special throws, adding a lot of variety to the gameplay.

The game lets you and a friend compete as one of nine different teams, using the same rules as the World Cup mode. The only drawback is that there’s only one court available for multiplayer, which prevented it from ranking higher. Despite that, it’s a really fun way to spend an afternoon.

6. Dr. Mario

Dedicated Doctor

Looking back, I’m glad I experienced Dr. Mario when I was younger and less critical. The game is still fun to play, but now the idea of simply tossing pills at illnesses feels less like being a real doctor and more like the actions of a drug company representative.

Even though it’s a bit strange to see Mario as a doctor, Dr. Mario is a great example of him taking on an unusual job in a game. It doesn’t really make sense for a plumber to suddenly become a doctor, but it’s incredibly fun! The game combines simple, satisfying puzzle gameplay with fantastic music and bright, colorful graphics.

Playing this game with a friend locally is a lot of fun, but I suggest you choose wisely! Unless you have a really solid friendship, this challenging puzzle game could strain your relationship and create some rivals.

5. Rampage

Smashing Tantrum

I don’t know what it says about us as people that we enjoy playing as giant monsters – probably not much good! But honestly, that doesn’t make games like Rampage any less fun. There’s just something incredibly satisfying about destroying everything in sight.

In this game, you get to play as a huge ape, a ferocious lizard, or a giant werewolf and destroy a whole city! You’ll scale buildings like King Kong, snatch up people, and even throw planes at cars. It’s incredibly satisfying, but don’t get too comfortable – eventually, the military will bring you down.

Rampage is a fantastic multiplayer game, but it didn’t rank higher simply because playing it in an arcade is even more enjoyable than playing it as couch co-op. However, that’s a small point and doesn’t change how good the game is with friends.

4. Double Dragon II: The Revenge

I first got into beat ’em up games with Double Dragon, but I spent much more time playing Double Dragon II: The Revenge with a friend. While I liked the original, the sequel was a significant improvement.

It was incredibly fun to run around, fighting enemies with punches, kicks, and even grabbing pipes when those didn’t do the trick. However, Double Dragon II wasn’t a walk in the park; the diverse range of enemies and bosses kept things challenging.

I used to spend many weekend afternoons playing this game with my close friends, and it was a great way for us to bond.

3. Super C

Muscle Men to the Rescue

Looking back, I wasn’t very good at the original Contra when I was a kid. The first Contra game I actually managed to get okay at was Super C, but that wasn’t due to my own skills! I played it with my babysitter, and she was a really skilled player.

Although it doesn’t quite reach the level of Contra III on the SNES, Super C was still a fantastic game. It threw even more strange aliens at you, with some truly unsettling enemies like the skull ship. While the Contra series often introduces monstrous creatures, Super C featured them more often and earlier in the game.

Simply put, Super C is a fantastic NES game for two players. Contra games are known for being challenging, but if you can learn enemy patterns and work together, you’ll be able to conquer this classic action shooter.

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game

It’s difficult to convey just how massively popular the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or TMNT, were back in the day. It seemed like they were everywhere – on TV, in comics, and as toys – and really captured the imagination of a whole generation. As someone who grew up then, I especially loved playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game.

This game was a more streamlined experience than the original NES title, playing as a classic side-scrolling beat ’em up. It brought back many memorable villains, including Bebop, Rocksteady, Stockman, and Shredder. Though a bit easier than the arcade game it was based on, the NES version was still really enjoyable.

At the very least, TMNT II: The Arcade Game serves as a reminder of when Konami was a dominant force in gaming, before the many Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games that came after.

1. Bubble Bobble

The Cave of Monsters

It’s easy to see why Bubble Bobble is so beloved. While it looks like a simple, colorful game, it was truly unique. There have been sequels, but none have recreated the magic of playing as two dinosaur brothers rescuing their girlfriends.

The story in Bubble Bobble isn’t particularly special, but the gameplay is fantastic. It requires both patience and quick reflexes – you need to carefully trap enemies in bubbles, but also hurry before they break free and become even more dangerous. Plus, you’ll be dodging a ghostly whale and battling a truly unsettling whistling enemy!

Bubble Bobble perfectly blends engaging gameplay with fantastic graphics and sound, and it’s full of hidden secrets you might still discover today. It’s a classic from the NES best enjoyed with a friend!
