NetEase is reportedly laying off employees again. Although the company hasn’t made an official statement, several workers at its Montreal studio have posted on social media confirming the job cuts.
Right now, the only known employees to be impacted are on the QA staff.
I was really sad to see the news about the layoffs at NetEase last week, and unfortunately, it meant my time there was over. I was a QA Project Manager, and honestly, it was a fantastic experience. I’m so grateful for the chance I had to learn and grow while I was there.
Someone else shared that they were recently laid off and have left their job at NetEase Games.
More NetEase Cuts Could Be Coming
Although recent news focuses on layoffs at NetEase Montreal, there’s a possibility of further cuts. Over the past few months, TopMob has spoken with people familiar with NetEase who have voiced concerns about the company’s future.
NetEase has stated it will continue to support its game studios even after planned layoffs in 2025. However, reports suggest the company is still considering selling off its studios in Western countries. This comes as NetEase increasingly focuses on investing in games developed within China, following the strong performance of titles like Wuchang: Fallen Feathers and Black Myth: Wukong.
NetEase is considering significant changes, including layoffs, selling off studios, and even closing some down. Sources at TopMob have revealed discussions are happening regarding at least two studios, one of which is developing a well-known game. People familiar with the situation say that all options are being considered for its studios located outside of China.
I just read that some members of Congress are asking the Federal Trade Commission to really investigate the potential sale of Electronic Arts to the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund.
