NetEase is closing one of its studios, just two years after it was first opened.
Fantastic Pixel Castle will close on November 17th, according to studio head Greg Street. Unfortunately, this likely means everyone who works there will lose their jobs.
Street announced on LinkedIn that securing funding becomes less likely after a certain date, and will depend on how many team members are still available. Their main focus now is helping their developers find new jobs, whether it’s with the potential new studio, Fantastic Pixel Castle 2.0, or at other established and reliable game and tech companies. While they hope to still make their game, supporting their team comes first.
Fantastic Pixel Castle, a studio created by NetEase in 2023, was developing a large-scale fantasy online game known internally as “Ghost.” Before leading this studio, Greg Street was a key systems designer for the popular game World of Warcraft.
I’m incredibly grateful to everyone—all those who offered to help us find funding, or connected us with potential investors. Your kindness is truly humbling, and even just one of those connections could make all the difference. We also want to thank NetEase for believing in us. And to our team, thank you for joining me on this adventure—I hope we can continue working together for a long time.
The studio has officially closed its doors just weeks after news emerged that NetEase was withdrawing its financial support. When the funding pullout was first announced, Street noted that NetEase had been helpful and understanding as the studio searched for a new partner.
