If you’re looking for a unique Christmas movie on Netflix, check out Better Watch Out. It’s a hilarious and scary horror comedy that I highly recommend – stream it as soon as you can! I don’t want to give away too much, because it’s best enjoyed knowing as little as possible, but it’s definitely worth watching.
If you enjoyed Home Alone, you might also like Better Watch Out. It has a similar feel, but with a much darker and more unsettling story. Home Alone is a classic Christmas movie, and Better Watch Out offers a clever and surprising twist on that familiar idea.
Don’t just take my recommendation – critics also liked Better Watch Out when it came out, and it currently has an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While it’s a horror comedy, it leans more into the horror elements, making it a really fun and entertaining movie, especially during the holidays. It’s definitely one of the best Christmas horror films available, and it’s my personal favorite. If you’d like to learn more about Better Watch Out without watching it, keep reading for a detailed overview.
If you don’t have Netflix, you can also find Better Watch Out streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, YouTube, and a number of free, ad-supported services.
A big part of what makes Better Watch Out so enjoyable is how it subverts expectations. The movie initially seems like a more intense version of Home Alone, featuring a babysitter and the child she’s watching defending themselves from an intruder. However, it quickly becomes clear that this intruder is far more dangerous and has genuinely murderous intentions, turning the film into something completely different than anticipated.
The movie takes a surprising turn right away: the seemingly simple home invasion is actually a plan orchestrated by Luke. He hopes to ‘rescue’ his babysitter, and then impress her. When Ashley figures out what’s happening, Luke attacks her and her boyfriend, holding them captive and subjecting them to a series of increasingly disturbing traps. These traps are reminiscent of the ones in Home Alone, but far more violent and frightening – including a swinging paint can and even a loose tarantula, making the connection to the original film very clear.
If you enjoy scary Christmas movies, Better Watch Out is definitely a good choice. You might also like Terrifier 3 and A Christmas Horror Story.
