Working together with Ubisoft, a live-action Assassin’s Creed series for Netflix was initially unveiled in 2020. Despite no further news about the adaptation surfacing over the subsequent years, an intriguing update on its development has been revealed recently. By combining their resources, these two powerful companies aim to bring the vast video game series to television screens, potentially leading to other stories from the popular games being adapted not just into live-action productions, but also animated and anime series in the future.
The journey for game movies, particularly Assassin’s Creed, hasn’t been a smooth one lately. Despite boasting heavyweight actors like Michael Fassbender, Jeremy Irons, and Marion Cotillard in the 2016 film, it failed to impress. Critics and audiences alike panned the movie, giving it a dismal 19% critical score and a 42% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The feedback was mostly negative, citing muffled dialogue, confusing plotlines, poor visuals, and a lackluster cast. But now there’s renewed optimism as Netflix has the opportunity to revive this adaptation that many have chosen to forget, and potentially rejuvenate the live-action franchise with a team of talented writers on board.
Assassin’s Creed Live-Action Series Has Found Its Writers’ Room

As reported by Nexus Point News, there’s been a significant advancement in the production of the live-action “Assassin’s Creed” television series on Netflix. After five years since its initial announcement, the project has now filled its writers’ room. Despite remaining unclear about the plot details, cast members, or the development stage, the news confirms that “Westworld” executive producer Roberto Patino and “Halo’s” David Wiener will oversee the production.
Alongside other contributors to the Netflix adaptation are Claire Kiechel, co-executive producer of HBO’s Watchmen and The Acolyte, Jaquén Castellanos also serving as co-executive producer (Good American Family and The Affair), Sanaz Toossi, a staff writer recognized for her work on A League of Their Own, Emily St John Mandel, a producer on Station Eleven, Sam Reynolds, writer from The Walking Dead: World Beyond, and Daniel Goldberg and Tom Hemmings, who will both contribute as staff writers.
Initially, Ubisoft and Netflix intended to create three projects – two animated and one live-action – but so far, none of these have been released. Jeb Stuart, famous for producing the Netflix series “Vikings: Valhalla,” was in charge of the “Assassin’s Creed” television show, but he left it two years ago. With video game adaptations gaining popularity, thanks to shows like “Fallout” and “The Last of Us,” this could be the perfect moment for a live-action version of “Assassin’s Creed” to make amends for its past errors in adaptation.
