NetherRealm Could Test The Waters For a Game With a Mortal Kombat Cameo

NetherRealm Could Test The Waters For a Game With a Mortal Kombat Cameo

As a long-time fan who has witnessed the evolution of NetherRealm Studios and their iconic Mortal Kombat franchise, I can confidently say that the idea of a Marvel cameo within the MK universe is not only intriguing but also a smart move. The success of their guest fighter roster over the years, including Kratos, Predator, and even RoboCop, has proven that they can seamlessly blend different IPs into their brutal fighting game.

For decades, NetherRealm Studios has been a significant player in the Mortal Kombat universe. Following Midway Games’ bankruptcy in 2009, Warner Bros. took over many of Midway’s assets, including the Chicago studio that later became known as NetherRealm Studios. This transformation led to the production of the successful 2011 reboot of Mortal Kombat, reviving the franchise’s popularity. Apart from sequels, NetherRealm has also ventured into creating another popular fighting game series – Injustice.

Since 2013 and 2017, the Injustice games have impressively portrayed the spirit of the DC Universe and its vibrant roster of characters, leaving fans eagerly wanting NetherRealm to tackle Marvel as well. If NetherRealm were to consider dipping their toes into a Marvel fighting game, they could effortlessly gauge interest by incorporating a guest fighter from the Mortal Kombat series.

NetherRealm Could Test The Waters With a Marvel Character Cameo in Mortal Kombat

A Cameo in Mortal Kombat Could Pave The Way for a Full Marvel Fighting Game

The Mortal Kombat series has welcomed numerous guest characters in recent times. The 2011 version of Mortal Kombat introduced Kratos from God of War and Freddy Krueger, while Mortal Kombat X brought in terrifying figures such as Predator, Alien, Leatherface, and Jason Voorhees. Most recently, Mortal Kombat 11 has featured well-known movie characters like The Terminator, Rambo, and RoboCop.

In line with the tradition set by its predecessors, Mortal Kombat 1 has been introducing guest fighters through DLC. The first wave brought Omni-Man, Peacemaker, and Homelander into the fray, while the second is gearing up to welcome Ghostface, the T-1000, and Conan the Barbarian. Given this trend, it seems quite plausible that a character from Marvel could make an appearance in the game soon.

As a diehard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement if a Marvel character were to make an appearance in Mortal Kombat! It’s been a long seven years since the last mainline Marvel vs. Capcom game graced our screens, and it’s been even longer since we’ve seen a solo Marvel fighting game. If Mortal Kombat can help end this drought, it could pave the way for NetherRealm to finally dip their toes into developing a Marvel fighting game – something fans have been eagerly awaiting for quite some time now. A successful Marvel cameo in Mortal Kombat would be a clear sign that a full-fledged Marvel fighting game might just be on the horizon!

Plenty of Marvel Characters Would Suit Mortal Kombat’s Tone and Style

In a hypothetical scenario where a Marvel Universe fighting game by NetherRealm is assumed to receive a lower age rating than Mortal Kombat, this situation presents an ideal chance to incorporate one of Marvel’s more violently depicted characters. There are numerous candidates for this role, with Deadpool and Wolverine being particularly fitting choices given their recent success in the MCU.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but imagine how epic it would be to see characters like Daredevil and The Punisher join the Mortal Kombat roster. Their move sets, grounded as they are, seem perfectly suited for this combat-focused universe. With the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again show premiering on Disney+ in March 2025, a cameo from these characters could serve as a fantastic tie-in.
