NetherRealm’s Next Fighting Game Needs the Sauce MK1’s Ghostface Brought

As someone who has been following NetherRealm Studios for years, I must say that the introduction of mystery characters like Ghostface in Mortal Kombat 1 and Nightwing in Injustice: Gods Among Us has always been one of my favorite aspects of these games. The sense of intrigue and speculation they create among fans is unparalleled, and it’s a strategy that I believe should be repeated more often.

The numerous universes of Mortal Kombat and Injustice brim with a variety of heroes, villains, and anti-heroes, ranging from the selfless flame-wielder Liu Kang to the once heroic Superman turned tyrant. Across NetherRealm Studios’ fighting games, characters of all kinds are present. Although some may not possess as rich or complex backstories as the main characters in Mortal Kombat and Injustice, each fighter provides unique perspectives and combat styles within the conflict-centered narratives of both series. However, the latest addition to Mortal Kombat 1’s roster, Ghostface, has sparked discussions among players about a topic rarely explored by other characters: their true identity. NetherRealm should aim to create more enigmatic characters like Ghostface in future releases.

Mortal Kombat 1’s Ghostface Explained

In the chilling “Scream” movie franchise, Ghostface is a character known for his role in the murder mystery and slasher films. Throughout these movies, one or more individuals wearing the Ghostface mask go on deadly rampages against groups of teens and young adults often connected to main character Sidney Prescott. The person under the Ghostface mask remains a secret, both for the characters within the story and the viewers, as each film’s plot revolves around unmasking the killer and preventing further bloodshed. Despite meeting their demise in every movie, Ghostface continues to be a mystery, keeping everyone guessing about who will take up the mask in the next installment.

In November 2024, Ghostface made its debut as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 1, added to the game through the Khaos Reigns expansion and Kombat Pack 2 as DLC. Ever since Ghostface was unveiled as a downloadable fighter, fans of both Mortal Kombat and Scream were abuzz with speculation about who this particular Ghostface might represent. Some anticipated a fresh character modeled after Ghostface’s Dead by Daylight appearance, while others suspected it would be one of the characters from the films donning the Ghostface mask. It turns out that the Ghostface in Mortal Kombat 1 is actually composed of three distinct characters: Billy Loomis, one of the original Ghostfaces hailing from the first Scream movie, and two members of the Black Dragon faction from Mortal Kombat: Deception named Kira and Kobra.

In the game Mortal Kombat 1, Ghostface typically wears his mask during battles; however, some Fatal Blows, Fatalities, and Brutalities will remove his mask to reveal Billy Loomis’ face beneath it.

The Allure of Mystery Characters in Future NetherRealm Games

Leading up to the unveiling of Ghostface in Mortal Kombat 1, I, along with many other fans, couldn’t help but engage in thrilling discussions about who this mysterious fighter might be. The anticipation and intrigue surrounding Ghostface made the experience all the more exciting. NetherRealm Studios could continue to captivate us by introducing more characters whose identities are kept secret initially, only to be revealed later in the game or perhaps never at all. Apart from Ghostface, NetherRealm has skillfully employed this technique before, such as when Damashi was unveiled as Kronika reborn in the base campaign of Mortal Kombat 1, and later revealed to actually be Titan Shang Tsung. Similarly, in Injustice: Gods Among Us, they kept us guessing about Earth-49’s Nightwing, only to reveal much later that he was none other than Damian Wayne, not Dick Grayson.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but speculate about the potential of Injustice 3, should it be the next masterpiece from NetherRealm Studios. Following the intriguing pattern set by Earth-49’s characters like Nightwing and Yellow Lantern Hal Jordan, who conceal their identities or transformations, a new character could be introduced wearing a mask or helmet whose true identity unfolds throughout the game. This could potentially be a brand-new, entirely masked Batman appearing in the aftermath of Bruce Wayne’s demise following Kevin Conroy’s passing – a poignant tribute to an iconic actor and character.

Potential Mystery Characters in Mortal Kombat 2

In the fresh universe of Mortal Kombat 1, future games from NetherRealm Studios might present previously known characters in disguise, wearing masks or helmets. For example, Mortal Kombat 2 could introduce a masked figure resembling Erron Black, only to later unmask him as Taven or another character who hasn’t been featured in Titan Liu Kang’s timeline up until now. NetherRealm might also create entirely new characters whose true identity is shrouded in mystery, both for fellow characters within the game and players alike. This could spark intrigue among Mortal Kombat fans, encouraging them to come up with theories and share their speculations about the unknown fighter’s true identity.
