The popular Arcade Archives series is now available on Nintendo Switch with a new collection called Console Archives. Originally released on PlayStation 4, Arcade Archives came to the Switch when the system first launched, bringing players updated, classic arcade and Neo Geo games. These new versions aren’t just preserved – they’ve been improved with features like online multiplayer for some games, multiple save files, and even a rewind function.
Since its debut on the Switch, nearly all of the Arcade Archives games have become available on Nintendo’s system. Surprisingly, Nintendo allowed Hamster Corporation to release its own classic arcade games under the Arcade Archives brand, but only on Nintendo consoles. The Arcade Archives series continued to expand to new platforms, and a new collection called Arcade Archives 2 launched alongside the Nintendo Switch 2.
New Arcade Archives and Console Archives Games Confirmed During Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase
Nintendo recently announced new additions to their classic game collections. The Arcade Archives series is getting Rave Racer, a popular title from the Ridge Racer franchise, on February 26th. At the same time, they introduced a new Console Archives line, launching today with two games for Nintendo Switch: Cool Boarders from PlayStation and Ninja Gaiden 2: The Dark Sword of Chaos from NES. Cool Boarders is priced at $11.99, and Ninja Gaiden 2 costs $7.99.
In addition to other games, Console Archives will bring the classic 1986 Famicom game Doraemon to American audiences for the first time, as it was originally based on the popular Japanese manga and never released here before. The Nintendo Direct also announced that Sonic Wings Special from 1996, a fast-paced shooter for PlayStation and Sega Saturn, will be added later on. The Direct briefly showed that Nobunaga’s Ambition for NES and Monster Rancher: Hop-A-Bout for PlayStation will also be included in the collection at some point.
The Console Archives series is Hamster Corporation’s latest step in keeping classic games alive and accessible to more players. Like Nintendo’s Virtual Console, it lets players purchase individual retro games without needing a subscription. Building on the success of their Arcade Archives – which already includes features like online play, save states, and rewind – adding these features to console games will make them even more appealing to a new generation of gamers.

The news that games like Sonic Wings Special and Monster Rancher: Hop-A-Bout are coming to Console Archives shows the collection won’t just focus on older, pre-3D console games. While the emphasis is on classics, Console Archives could eventually include more recent games that are no longer available. Given Nintendo’s recent willingness to license its arcade titles, there’s even a possibility that Hamster might be able to re-release some of Nintendo’s classic console games outside of the Nintendo Switch Online service.
