New Banjo-Kazooie Fan Game is Only Playable on PlayStation

A skilled PlayStation gamer, disappointed with how Xbox has handled the Banjo-Kazooie series, decided to make their own fan-made Banjo-Kazooie game. They built it using Dreams, a game creation tool exclusive to PlayStation.

For years, Xbox fans have been hoping for a new installment in the Banjo-Kazooie series, but Microsoft hasn’t prioritized it. Since acquiring Rare in 2002, only one main Banjo-Kazooie game, Nuts & Bolts, was released – a good Xbox 360 exclusive that left players wanting more. While the original three games were included in the 2015 Rare Replay collection, fans have waited 17 years for any new content. During that time, Rare has focused on other projects, including Kinect Sports and the very successful Sea of Thieves.

New Banjo-Kazooie Fan Game Was Made Entirely in Dreams

Eupholace, the creator of the Banjo-Kazooie: Mumbomania trailer, recently shared a video on X showcasing their work. They collaborated with Piece_of_Craft and duckenomics on this project, which was built using the game Dreams on PlayStation 4. The trailer captures the spirit of the original Banjo-Kazooie and presents a vision of what a modern game in the series might look like. Banjo-Kazooie: Mumblemania seems to be a remake of the Treasure Trove Cove level from the first game. While it’s unknown if the developer intends to recreate more levels, they jokingly suggested that Dreams might be discontinued before they have a chance.

Eupholace says it took about 14 months and over 800 hours to create the project, but surprisingly, playing through it only takes 1-2 hours. They were inspired to make Banjo-Kazooie: Mumblemania because they wanted to improve on aspects of the original game, and they spent a lot of time experimenting to find the best solutions. Players on X (formerly Twitter) were incredibly impressed with Banjo-Kazooie: Mumblemania, with many surprised it was built within the Dreams game. It’s somewhat ironic that only PlayStation players can experience this fan-made game, considering the Banjo-Kazooie franchise is now owned by Microsoft.

Since its release in 2020, the game Dreams has empowered players to build amazing projects, often recreating elements from other popular games. Fans have been particularly creative, with one player even building a tribute to Ratchet and Clank. Even after five years, Dreams continues to showcase incredibly impressive creations from its dedicated community.

Currently, it doesn’t look like a new Banjo-Kazooie game is planned. While there were reports in January of Xbox considering new pitches for the franchise, nothing has come of them so far. Despite this, many gamers still want to see the classic series return, and its long absence is a bit surprising, even though 3D platformers aren’t as popular as they once were. However, Rare, the original developer, is busy with the success of Sea of Thieves. This raises the question of whether Microsoft would consider letting another studio revive Banjo-Kazooie.
