Starting from August 2025, Gearbox is offering a promotion where fans can collect three Golden Keys across various editions of five Borderlands games. Similar to previous free Borderlands items, these can be obtained by entering Shift codes during this summer event.
In 2012, prior to the launch of Borderlands 2, Gearbox introduced a digital platform called Shift. This platform often facilitates temporary events, such as distributing Golden Keys for the Borderlands series.
Moving forward, Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, has shared on Twitter another deal linked with the code “SFX3T-JSSJ3-3BBTT-J3BJ3-9XWXJ”. Until August 14 (next Thursday), fans can exchange this key during the promotion and receive three Golden Keys in their preferred Borderlands games.

Multiple instances can redeem the identical Shift code, with each redemption occurring on a different compatible game platform configuration.
As per tests conducted by Game Rant, the redemption code for August 2025 can be used multiple times, with each use applicable to a unique pairing of a Borderlands game and its respective platform. This offer encompasses five games in total: the initial three numbered installments within the series, along with Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. It’s important to note that the exception to this is the Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, which can only be redeemed on Steam, PlayStation Store, and Xbox Store; it’s not available for redemption on the Epic Games Store because the game itself isn’t offered on that platform.
For each redemption of the code, players receive three Golden Keys applicable to their chosen game and platform. If a player wants to make use of all supported games and platforms, they can redeem the August 2025 code up to 19 times. Since this giveaway is being managed by Shift rather than tied directly to specific digital storefronts, it provides an advantage as players can redeem the code even for games they don’t currently own. The keys will be there for them when they decide to purchase these games. There have been some reports on social media about users experiencing technical issues preventing them from redeeming the new Shift code, but these instances seem relatively rare.
Where to Find Redeemed Golden Keys in Borderlands Games
The way loot keys function in different Borderlands games can differ. In Borderlands 1 and 2, once you redeem a key, it goes straight into your inventory and can be used at the Fyrestone or Sanctuary chests. For Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, these keys must be collected from the Shift Machine in Concordia’s center. In Borderlands 3 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, redeemed Golden Keys are delivered to your mailbox, a system that both games employ. As for how Borderlands 4 will distribute Golden Keys via Shift codes, Gearbox has not yet provided any details.
