New Borderlands Game Shadow Dropped

A new Borderlands game unexpectedly launched, but it’s currently only playable on iPhones and iPads. Even though the last major Borderlands game came out less than a year ago, fans are getting a surprise new experience, though it’s a bit different from the larger console and PC titles. This marks the first time the popular shooting and loot-collecting series has been released as a mobile game, with no prior announcement.

Look, I’ve been a big Borderlands fan for ages, and things have been kinda weird lately. Borderlands 4 had a rocky start with some drama before launch, but it actually seemed pretty good at first. Then, the player count on Steam just plummeted – like, 93% in two months! Gearbox has been working hard to fix things since then, releasing patches, adding a new character, and promising more improvements down the line. But honestly, the biggest surprise is what else they’re doing with the Borderlands universe this year – it’s definitely not what I was expecting!

Borderlands Mobile is Available Now on iOS

Fans recently discovered Borderlands Mobile unexpectedly appeared on the Apple App Store without any prior announcement from Gearbox or Take-Two. The game was developed by Zynga, which Take-Two acquired in 2022 for $12.7 billion. It brings the familiar chaotic action, art style, and gunplay of Borderlands to mobile devices. Gameplay is similar to the classic Borderlands games, but with shorter missions and smaller battles – though there’s still plenty of shooting and loot! Currently, it’s only available on iOS, and it’s unknown if an Android version will be released. Notably, the game is free to play, which is especially interesting following discussions about the price of Borderlands 4.

Although it’s not as expansive as previous Borderlands titles, the mobile version currently feels more finished than the last main game, offering seven different game modes right away with more on the way. Currently, you can play as one character type, the Summoner, but three more – the Exo-Tank, Outrider, and Assassin – will be added later. Like many free mobile games, it includes a battle pass, though the price and rewards are still unknown.

Although it didn’t make a big splash when it launched, Borderlands Mobile clearly aims to please fans who’ve been with the series for a while. It’s packed with familiar foes like skags and bandits, and even includes challenging bosses. The game also references a popular side quest from Borderlands 3 by featuring the Circles of Slaughter. It’s too early to say how well it will do – there aren’t enough reviews yet to give it a rating – but it seems to offer a lot of content, which is impressive for a free-to-play game.

Okay, so a Borderlands game on mobile wasn’t exactly on my radar, but honestly, it could be a fun surprise. We’ve seen other big franchises like Pokemon and Call of Duty kill it on mobile, so maybe this looter shooter can too. It’s tough to say for sure until more people actually play it and Zynga delivers on all the content they’ve promised. But hey, even if it’s not perfect, it might be a good way to pass the time while we wait for more Borderlands 4 DLC and updates.
