Okay, so I just got to try an early demo of this game called Roots of Fury, and it’s seriously cool! It’s a hack-and-slash RPG you can play with a friend on the couch, and the twist is you’re shrunk down to bug size in this awesome origami world. It feels a lot like It Takes Two with a dash of Paper Mario – you know, familiar gameplay but totally fresh because of the setting. It’s coming to PC on Steam soon, and I’m already hooked!
Recently, there’s been a resurgence of interest in games that let you play with a friend on the same screen. 2021’s Game of the Year, It Takes Two, really brought back the popular “couch co-op” experience from the 90s and early 2000s. Now, Roots of Fury is joining the trend, offering a visually striking world where teamwork and fighting skills are essential for survival.
Roots of Fury Trailer and Gameplay Demo
In the action role-playing game Roots of Fury, you play as a quirky scientist who shrinks down to insect size to protect their plant research from dangerous bugs. You can choose to specialize as a botanist, chemist, physicist, or doctor, each with different strengths, skills, and abilities – like healing. While facing threats like locusts and grasshoppers, you can ally with ants and create weapons from defeated enemies. Roots of Fury blends fast-paced combat with a charming art style reminiscent of Paper Mario, and a playable demo is available on Steam.
Roots of Fury can be played either with a friend in local split-screen co-op, or solo – unlike some co-op focused games like It Takes Two. It’s more similar to games like Grounded in that regard. Players can focus on fighting bugs, defending their hive, crafting weapons, or simply exploring the beautifully designed world of tiny scientists, all presented in a unique origami style. If you enjoy co-op games, Roots of Fury is definitely worth checking out.

Steam offers a wide variety of co-op games, from recent successes like Split Fiction to classics such as Castle Crashers, keeping players entertained across many genres. Despite the competition, Roots of Fury hopes to stand out with its unique combination of dungeon exploration and impressive graphics when it launches.
