Bloober Team recently released their very first behind-the-scenes video about their upcoming game titled “Cronos: The New Dawn.” This video provides a glimpse into the game’s setting, influences, and creature designs, as well as some exclusive, never-before-seen gameplay clips. This is the first sneak peek at “Cronos: The New Dawn” since late 2024.

Back in October 2024, the developer of the Silent Hill 2 remake first introduced Cronos: The New Dawn. According to Bloober Team, this upcoming game is a blend of sci-fi and survival horror genres with intricate time-travel mechanics and high-intensity action. Currently, they aim to launch it in the year 2025.

At the 2025 Game Developers Conference during March 20, Bloober Team unveiled the first installment of their developer diaries for Cronos: The New Dawn. This five-minute video showcases co-directors Jacek Zieba and Wojciech Piejko discussing the setting of Cronos: The New Dawn, while also exploring key aspects such as its backstory, characters, and monsters.

Cronos: The New Dawn Has a Wide Range of Inspirations

The world of the upcoming game, “Cronos: The New Dawn,” is influenced by a diverse range of well-known horror and sci-fi sources, such as John Carpenter’s “The Thing,” the Netflix series “Dark,” Terry Gilliam’s “12 Monkeys,” and the “Dark Souls” series by FromSoftware. In terms of gameplay, “Cronos: The New Dawn” will borrow elements from games like “Resident Evil” and “Dead Space,” offering tough battles with gruesome visuals and dismemberment. However, the co-directors mentioned that the system for severing enemy limbs in this game won’t be identical to that in “Dead Space.” Instead, they plan to offer their unique interpretation of action horror combat.

In the game “Cronos: The New Dawn,” the story unfolds in an alternate Earth where a catastrophic event called The Change wiped out most of mankind in the ’80s. The main character, who goes by the name of Traveler, is tasked with locating temporal fissures to travel back in time and rescue individuals who didn’t make it through The Change. The world they traverse is populated with creatures known as The Orphans. Piejko and Zieba clarified that these creatures are, in essence, the remnants of humanity that survived The Change.

As a gamer, I’ve come to know the Orphans as these chilling entities that morph in ways more horrifying than my nightmares. What sets them apart is their origin – they’re crafted from human flesh, a nod to the entire body horror genre, as Zieba puts it. In the first developer diary for Cronos: The New Dawn, we catch glimpses of some never-before-seen monsters, though details are kept under wraps. Towards the end of the video, the co-directors spill a bit about the game’s minutiae, such as including ladders, walls made of flesh, melee combat, and at least one firearm. When asked whether we might encounter aliens in the game, Zieba and Piejko left us hanging with a cryptic “maybe.
