As a passionate gamer and long-time supporter of diversity and inclusion in the gaming industry, I’m deeply disappointed to see the recent review bombing of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn on Xbox. I’ve been eagerly anticipating this Souls-lite game since its announcement, drawn in by its unique setting, engaging trailers, and the promise of challenging gameplay reminiscent of my favorite FromSoftware titles.

As a long-time fan of FromSoftware’s Souls series, I was thrilled to hear about Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, the new day one Xbox Game Pass release that promised a Souls-lite experience. Having spent countless hours battling through the intricately designed worlds and punishing bosses of games like Dark Souls and Sekiro, I was eager to see how this new title would compare.

The scoring for Flintlock on OpenCritic averages out to a 70 overall, suggesting a varied response from critics. However, Steam users have been more approving, granting the game a “Mostly Positive” status. Unfortunately, Flintlock has become the focus of malicious reviewers on Xbox Marketplace, resulting in a dismal rating of 2.6.

Currently, approximately half of the user reviews for Flintlock on Xbox award the game a poor rating of 1 out of 5 stars. Upon examining the critical comments, it’s evident that some users express dissatisfaction with the main character being a Black woman. Regrettably, certain reviews contain offensive language which we choose not to repeat. However, it’s important to note that not all negative feedback is based on this issue. Some users have raised genuine concerns about technical glitches such as stuttering.

Unfortunately, Flintlock is experiencing some negative feedback, which is unfortunately common for new game releases. Some users may have not played the game thoroughly or at all, but rather leave unfavorable reviews based on brief encounters. Prospective players should disregard these low ratings and consider giving Flintlock a try before forming an opinion. After all, it’s possible to experience the game firsthand without making a purchase.

Previously noted, Flintlock is an Xbox Game Pass title accessible on standard, PC, and Game Pass Ultimate memberships. Players with a fondness for Souslike games now have the opportunity to experience Flintlock in its entirety without hesitation.

As a long-time Xbox Game Pass subscriber, I’m thrilled that I get to enjoy “Flintlock” on the standard tier of the service. With Microsoft’s recent announcement limiting major day one games to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, it’s great to see that this title won’t be restricted for those of us who don’t opt for the more expensive subscription tiers. Having grown up playing video games on various platforms, I value the accessibility and affordability that game pass offers, allowing me to explore new releases at a reasonable cost. So, I’m glad that “Flintlock” will be part of my gaming journey without having to upgrade my subscription.
