Recent leaks suggest a new Dead Rising game is in development, potentially bringing photojournalist Frank West back to the spotlight – this time in Hollywood. If confirmed, this would be the first major installment in the series since 2016’s Dead Rising 4, which didn’t receive great reviews or sell well.
While the original Dead Rising received a remastered version last year, the series has been largely inactive for nearly ten years. Rumors about a Dead Rising reboot started in 2023, but didn’t go anywhere – until recently. Many fans thought the series was over, but Capcom has a history of successfully reviving popular franchises after long periods. The twelve-year wait for the Dragon’s Dogma sequel, which launched in 2024, is a prime example. Given Dead Rising‘s past success, it’s likely Capcom will try to bring it back again.
Dead Rising Could Be Headed To Hollywood
A new Dead Rising game is reportedly in development at Capcom, according to MP1st. This isn’t a remake or remaster, but a brand new installment featuring Frank West, the protagonist from both Dead Rising 1 and 4. The game, currently known as ‘Rec,’ may be a direct continuation of the original Dead Rising story. It’s unclear how it will connect to Dead Rising 4. Sources also indicate Frank will bring back his signature camera, a key feature of the series.
Great news for photographers! A new Dead Rising game is reportedly set in Hollywood, specifically a movie studio lot. According to MP1st, a crazy film director will force the main character to compete in challenges to help create a movie. If the report is accurate, the game will really utilize the Hollywood setting, featuring Dead Rising survivors disguised as actors hiding after a zombie outbreak. Rescuing survivors is a key part of the Dead Rising series, and it sounds like that classic gameplay will be back in this new title.
Overall, the new game appears to be staying true to what makes the Dead Rising series unique. MP1st reports that the Psychopaths will likely return as enemies controlled by the game’s director. Interestingly, early in the game, the player character, Frank, saves one of these enemies, who is then forced to film events while wearing a bomb. The game doesn’t need to drastically change to be successful; fans simply want the same fun and chaotic atmosphere of the original games, and if Capcom can deliver that, it looks promising. However, it seems the new Dead Rising is still quite a ways off from being released.
If the new game takes place on a Hollywood movie lot, it would fit with the series’ origins. The first Dead Rising was set in a shopping mall reminiscent of Dawn of the Dead, and the second game used a similar location. Later installments, Dead Rising 3 and 4, experimented with large, open worlds, but many fans didn’t enjoy that change. A confined movie set would bring the series back to its roots – detailed, smaller environments. Plus, according to MP1st, the new game may also bring back the time limit that was a key part of the original Dead Rising experience.
