During the 2025 holiday season, the Epic Games Store has been giving away free games. While many have been great discoveries, the newest free game has a unique requirement: it’s only playable with a friend. Epic Games announced that the indie game We Were Here Together will be free to download on December 26th and 27th, but you’ll need to team up with someone else to actually play it.
I remember when We Were Here Together first came out in 2019! It’s a really cool game where you and a friend have to solve puzzles together, and you’re totally reliant on talking to each other to figure things out – it feels like being stuck in an escape room. It wasn’t perfect – some people had issues with how it looked and a few of the puzzles were a little too tricky – but overall, it’s a pretty complex and gripping story. It’s often given away on the Epic Games Store, which is awesome, but just a heads up: you definitely need a friend to play with, or you won’t get very far!
We Were Here Together Joins Epic Games Store Freebies for December 2025
It’s good to know that We Were Here Together received a significant update in October 2025, which likely fixed some of its earlier problems. A helpful feature is cross-play, letting players enjoy the game together even if they’re on different platforms – one could get it for free through the Epic Games Store, while another plays on Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch. Interestingly, We Were Here Together is only the second cooperative game offered for free on the Epic Games Store. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night was the first, but it’s primarily a single-player game with a co-op option. In December, Epic Games Store also gave away Hogwarts Legacy, Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel, Eternights, Blood West, Sorry We’re Closed, Paradise Killer, The Callisto Protocol, and Disco Elysium – The Final Cut for free.
Total Mayhem Games It’s great that We Were Here Together is available for free, but it’s a game that requires two players to cooperate online – it doesn’t support split-screen play. So, if you want to play, make sure a friend also grabs the game before the offer ends at 11am ET / 9am PT on Saturday, December 27th. Keep an eye on the Epic Games Store for announcements about five more free games coming before the end of 2025, and for news about future releases in 2026.
