Actor Ben Whishaw, famous for his role as “Q” in the newer James Bond movies with Daniel Craig, could be collaborating with Kit Connor in the upcoming Elden Ring adaptation. Although specifics about his character haven’t been revealed yet, it’s said that he is negotiating for a substantial part. The initial news of this casting came from Jeff Sneider via his newsletter The InSneider.
If it’s accurate, this situation could lead to a reunion for Whishaw with Kit Connor, given their previous collaboration on the 2019 drama “Little Joe.” It was in May when Connor was first associated with the “Elden Ring” movie, and rumors indicated that a deal for him to be part of the cast was nearly finalized. Meanwhile, Whishaw has also appeared in projects such as “A Very English Scandal,” “Cloud Atlas,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “Black Doves,” and the fourth season of “Fargo,” alongside his role as Q.
It was officially announced this year that Alex Garland is set to write and direct the upcoming movie adaptation of Elden Ring, ending several weeks of speculation about his involvement. The initial assumption that he had agreed to lead the game adaptation with A24 and Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. caused some confusion due to Garland’s previous statement about retiring from directing after the 2024 release of Civil War. If this move goes ahead, it will bring Garland together once again with Connor, following their collaboration on the 2025 film titled Warfare.
After the triumph of numerous movies inspired by video games, production companies have been swift to obtain licenses for popular gaming series for both film and TV versions. The success of Elden Ring, which has sold more than 30 million copies since its launch in 2022, undoubtedly made it an attractive prospect, given its link to fantasy author George R. R. Martin, whose Game of Thrones books were turned into HBO’s Game of Thrones series based on his A Song of Ice and Fire novels. The writer collaborated with the game’s creator Hidetaka Miyazaki and developer FromSoftware to create a backstory and contribute to the game’s world-building.
After its debut, the game known as Elden Ring has introduced two additional components: the expansion called Shadow of the Eritrea and a separate spinoff titled Elden Ring Nightreign. While it’s been quite successful, there have been discussions about turning it into a live-action adaptation, which has caused some apprehension since much of the game’s story unfolds as players explore its world.
The production of the Elden Ring movie is being handled by DNA Films’ Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich, in collaboration with Peter Rice, Vince Gerardis, and George R.R. Martin. Notably, A24, a production company that has worked extensively with Garland on projects like Ex Machina and Men, is also involved. A24 is the same company that released Everything Everywhere All at Once, a film that garnered seven Oscars at the 95th Academy Awards.
