Falcom’s Kyoto Xanadu Is Confirmed For Nintendo Switch 2
Nihon Falcom, the acclaimed RPG developer, has officially announced that Kyoto Xanadu, first shown at Nintendo’s February 2026 Partner Showcase, is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. This new game is a sequel to their 2015 action RPG, Tokyo Xanadu.
Kyoto Xanadu puts players in the role of Rei as he navigates a fantastical version of Japan, with Kyoto as its capital. In this world, a hidden parallel universe is home to dangerous monsters. When these creatures start crossing over into Rei’s reality, he teams up with his classmates at Hirasaka Academy – a school for students with special abilities – to stop them. Together, they strive to master Xanadu, a complex labyrinth believed to be the source of the alternate world.

Kyoto Xanadu is a unique game that mixes action RPG battles with 2D platforming. Players control Rei as he explores the ever-changing labyrinth of Xanadu, altering the landscape to find hidden paths and secrets. When facing tough enemies, the game shifts to exciting, action-focused combat. Rei must use his newly discovered powers to defeat gigantic creatures and protect the boundary between Kyoto and this mysterious world. Between adventures in Xanadu, players will experience life as a student at Kyoto’s Hirasaka Academy, attending classes, training, and building relationships. What Rei does at school directly impacts his abilities and progress within Xanadu, creating a connected gameplay experience.

Nihon Falcom is a highly respected game developer, especially among RPG fans, and is known for creating many critically acclaimed role-playing games. While the popular Trails in the Sky series (known as Kiseki in Japan) brought them wider attention, Falcom has a long history dating back before 2004. The Trails series actually started as a spin-off of The Legend of Heroes, which itself was built upon the foundation of the Dragon Slayer games that first appeared in 1985. In 2015, with the release of Tokyo Xanadu, Falcom expressed a wish to explore new ideas and create a game that felt distinct from their previous work.

The original Xanadu, released in 1985 as part of the Dragon Slayer series, combined platforming and RPG gameplay. Dragon Slayer is well-known for influencing many action RPGs that followed, and Xanadu was notable for its innovative features, such as a morality system and equipment that visibly altered your character. Kyoto Xanadu aims to directly build upon these classic roots when it releases in the summer of 2026.
