New Fantasy MMORPG is Already a Hit on Steam

The new massively multiplayer online game, Project: Gorgon, has quickly become a hit on Steam, exceeding all predictions. Developed and published by Elder Game, LLC – a studio founded by two experienced game developers – Project: Gorgon offers a deeply immersive experience. Unlike many traditional MMOs, the game doesn’t rely on quest markers or icons to guide players; instead, it encourages exploration and careful attention to the game world and conversations with characters. Similarly, characters learn skills – everything from sword fighting to dancing – simply by practicing them.

For a while, the online game Project: Gorgon was available in early access, but it generally had only 200-300 players playing at the same time. The developers likely hoped for more players, but that level of activity was consistent. However, everything changed when the full version of the game launched. Player numbers jumped dramatically, going from a few hundred to thousands in just a couple of days. While this success is great, it appears the game’s creators, Elder Game, weren’t quite prepared for such a large influx of players.

Project: Gorgon’s Success Nears Overpopulation

I’ve been keeping an eye on Project: Gorgon, and it’s been wild! SteamDB data shows it started getting some buzz before January 29th, but only hit around 700 players before launch. Then things really took off. We peaked at over 2,200 players on February 1st, which is awesome! It hasn’t quite reached that peak since, but we’re still consistently seeing over 2,000 people playing each day. It’s great to see so many people enjoying the game, but it’s definitely putting a strain on the servers. They even added a second server just for launch, but it wasn’t enough! Thankfully, the community’s been really supportive – no review bombing or anything like that. The developers, Elder Game, are on it though. They put up a message in-game saying they’re working on fixes and are even bringing up a third server to help handle the load.

The second server in Project: Gorgon was designed to give both new and returning players a clean slate. However, it’s become incredibly popular, and during busy times, areas like Serbule and the beginner island experience significant lag. This causes frustrating delays – sometimes several seconds – when trying to perform simple actions like selling items or progressing in conversations. The large number of players is also leading to fewer available enemies and resources. While players aren’t extremely upset, they have been expressing their concerns about these issues.

People online are both excited about the game’s success and frustrated with issues like lag and problems caused by a large player base. It’s fantastic to see a smaller game do well, but that success is tempered by the difficulty of competing with many others for the same in-game resources. While it’s unlikely to cause widespread refunds, it is still a bit frustrating. However, Project: Gorgon has a charming, old-school dedication to player immersion, so most MMO fans will probably stick with it despite these temporary problems.
