New Final Fantasy 9 Anime Project Leaked

The anime adaptation of Final Fantasy 9 that was previously put on hold is now back in development and expected to be released around 2028. While many fans were hoping for a remake of the game, this project will be an animated series instead.

Since the original game came out in 1987, the Final Fantasy series has delighted players with epic role-playing adventures. Over the last 31 years, several Final Fantasy anime shows and movies have also been released, mostly as direct-to-video OVAs. There’s been one full-season anime series and a movie as well, and recently, another project that seemed stalled has been revived.

Final Fantasy 9 is Getting an Anime Adaptation

I remember celebrating the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 9 this summer. It originally came out in Japan on the PlayStation on July 7th, 2000. As part of the anniversary, there was talk about an animated series based on the game – it had been officially announced by Cyber Group Studios back in 2021. But things seemed uncertain for a while. Unfortunately, the French animation studio filed for bankruptcy in 2024, and in April 2025, a judge ordered them to sell off all their assets. It looks like the series won’t be happening, at least not anytime soon.

Thanks to a recent report from French industry publication Ecran Total, it’s becoming clearer why the animated series was highlighted in the celebration. The series is now expected to be released around 2028 and will be finished with the help of Euro Visual, a company known for popular French children’s shows like Atout 5 and seasons two and three of The Bellflower Bunnies. Like their other projects, this Final Fantasy 9 series is aimed at children aged 6-13, which fits well with the ninth game’s lighter and more cartoonish style compared to other titles in the series. The report indicates the series will consist of 13 episodes, each about 22 minutes long, and will be created using 2D animation.

Fans are happy to see the animated series moving forward, but it’s likely not the news they were hoping for. After the popular release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake in 2020, players began requesting remakes of other classic Final Fantasy games. For the past four years, rumors have circulated about a remake of Final Fantasy 9, with evidence from datamining and reliable sources suggesting Square Enix is actually working on it.

Square Enix hasn’t officially announced a remake of the beloved RPG Final Fantasy 9, and recent reports suggest the project may be stalled. In October, a known leaker, Nate the Hate, stated he had no new information, implying the remake had been delayed or cancelled. While Nate the Hate’s accuracy isn’t always guaranteed, he has correctly predicted gaming news in the past, including Nintendo Switch 2 releases and details from game presentations.
