On Monday, July 7th, it’s going to be a special day for me as a gamer – that’s when the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 9 falls! You see, I remember playing this game back in 2000 on my original PlayStation console in Japan. Four months later, North America got its hands on it on November 14th. Over time, updated versions of Final Fantasy 9 have popped up on platforms like the PS4 and Switch.

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about a possible remake of Final Fantasy 9, which started in 2021 after the Nvidia GeForce Now leak hinted at projects such as Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles and Sony potentially bringing some of their first-party titles to PC. So, here’s hoping we get to relive this classic RPG soon!

Despite no official announcement about a remake of Final Fantasy 9 on July 7th, fans continue to express their anticipation following Square Enix’s recent social media shares. According to Push Square, the official Final Fantasy pages have unveiled three new pieces of artwork related to Final Fantasy 9, showcasing various locations and characters in each. Two of these artworks were released on June 30th, with a third one appearing on July 1st.

The initial social media post about Final Fantasy 9 was a calendar designed by artist Yuya Ishihata, which depicted the game’s main cast on Tantalus’ main theater stage. On the same day, June 30th, another artwork illustrated by character designer Toshiyuki Itahana emerged, featuring the game’s main antagonist, Kuja, gazing at the roots of the Iifa Tree.

On July 1st, Itahana shared an image from Final Fantasy 9 featuring the game’s primary characters gathered on the Iifa Tree’s roots, with two moons hovering near each other in the sky. This post followed the widespread popularity of Itahana’s character art for Final Fantasy 9, which sparked even more speculation about a possible remake. At present, Square Enix has not confirmed whether they are working on a remake project for Final Fantasy 9, so fans can only anticipate any potential updates in the time to come.
