If you liked Stray, the critically acclaimed adventure game from 2022, you might also enjoy Not My War. This new game offers a similar experience – a dystopian adventure where you play as an animal – but with its own unique stealth-based gameplay and extra features. Released on Steam on November 20th, Not My War has already received positive feedback and several updates. Best of all, it’s completely free to download and play!
The game Stray was highly praised for its beautiful world and touching story about an orange cat trying to escape a robot-filled, ruined city. Players loved its charming character and easy-to-learn gameplay, though some wished there was more to do beyond exploring, running, and jumping. If you enjoyed Stray but wanted a game with a bit more action and engaging mechanics, Not My War might be a great fit.
Not My War Takes the Basics of Stray But Adds Combat and More
In Not My War, you’ll explore an island torn apart by a recent war. You play as a resourceful ferret – once a test subject – trying to escape the ruins of humanity’s final battle against the machines it built. Using tools like flashbangs and smoke grenades, and scavenging the environment for distractions, you’ll need to outsmart ever-shifting machine patrols. Quick thinking is key, as you’ll have to consider both what enemies can see and hear. The changing day-night cycle adds another layer of challenge, altering visibility and enemy movements, forcing you to adapt constantly. Sometimes, your only hope for survival will be to hide and wait in burrows.

A standout feature of Not My War is its limited inventory, which works like the one in Resident Evil. As you find resources while trying to escape, you’ll need to carefully choose what to carry, leaving some items behind. Different items help you avoid the machines, so it’s a good idea to collect as much as you can, but remember you can’t carry everything!

As players explore, they’ll meet other survivors and discover their stories through conversations and by examining the world around them. The island is covered in remnants of a past war, and by investigating old military bases, players can uncover the truth about what happened and how humanity fell. These investigations also reveal the fate of forgotten experiments left to fend for themselves. Not My War blends stealth, combat, and survival elements, offering a reflective experience that involves searching a ruined 3D world and guiding a solitary ferret on a journey similar to the game Stray.
Games starring animals as heroes have been popular for a long time, starting with classics like Sonic the Hedgehog, Spyro the Dragon, and Banjo-Kazooie. While newer games such as Stray and Not My War focus on more emotional and serious stories than those older titles, players still love the combination of cute animals and fun gameplay. If you’re interested, you can try Not My War, a game featuring a ferret in a dystopian world, for free on Steam and stay updated on future PC and console releases.
