A new free-to-play MMO called Winds of Valen has launched on Steam, and it’s heavily inspired by the classic game RuneScape. While the developers at Head Coach Games clearly drew inspiration from Jagex’s popular title, player reactions are currently mixed regarding whether Winds of Valen successfully captures the spirit of RuneScape.
Head Coach Games, known for last year’s Cyber League Football on Steam, has now released Winds of Valen. It’s a big leap from football to a fantasy massively multiplayer online game, but it’s great to see an independent developer trying out different types of games. While Cyber League Football was a paid game and didn’t get a lot of attention, Winds of Valen is already receiving more reviews on Steam.
Winds of Valen is a New Steam MMORPG That’s Completely Free
The free-to-play MMORPG Winds of Valen is now available on Steam. Developed by Head Coach Games, it’s designed for fans of classic MMOs like Old School RuneScape, offering a vast, open world where you can develop combat skills (like Attack, Defence, and Warding) and professions such as Mining and Smithing. Everything is connected – you can gather resources and use them to craft better equipment for fighting. Enemies each have unique loot, and the game emphasizes a sandbox-style, open-ended experience.
It’s easy to see the influence of RuneScape in Winds of Valen. The game shares RuneScape‘s appealing, simple visual style, and its skill system focuses on gathering resources, much like Jagex’s popular MMO. Winds of Valen lets players explore the world and progress however they choose, offering a non-linear experience. The combat is also reminiscent of RuneScape, featuring turn-based attacks between the player and enemies – simple, but effective. While most combat is straightforward, the bosses in Winds of Valen include unique mechanics to keep things interesting. RuneScape excels in many areas, so it’s great to see another game drawing inspiration from it.

The gameplay is fairly straightforward, which makes it a good entry point for those new to MMOs. One player noted that many MMOs are overly complicated, and this game’s simplicity is a refreshing change, though others feel there isn’t a lot to do yet. Many reviewers see a lot of potential in Winds of Valen and believe it could be a great game in the future. Plus, since it’s free to play, players don’t have much to lose by giving it a try.

While Winds of Valen doesn’t have a huge amount of content yet, it’s built on a solid base and has a lot of potential for future improvements. The number of players on Steam isn’t very high at the moment, but that could easily change as the game becomes more popular.
