New FromSoftware Game Could Be a Dark Souls Remake, and That’s Just the Tip of the Iceber

In terms of upcoming projects, FromSoftware appears to have an incredibly active schedule. The much-anticipated Elden Ring: Nightreign DLC and The Duskbloods for the Switch 2 are just two examples. Additionally, there’s Project FMC, a secret, unannounced title that has sparked significant discussion among gamers and fans. Rumors suggest that this FromSoftware project could be a multi-platform release, potentially available within the next year.

Given the pattern of code names FromSoftware has used in the past for their projects, it’s reasonable to assume that the upcoming project with the code name FMC will either be a revamp of the Dark Souls series or an extension of the Armored Core franchise. For example, Dark Souls 3 was known internally as FDP, and Armored Core 6 carried the label FNR. The fact that Miyazaki has mentioned he won’t direct another Dark Souls sequel could mean we might see a remake or expansion instead.

FromSoftware Hasn’t Made a Remake (Yet)

Although FromSoftware has ventured into re-mastering some titles, they haven’t delved into remake productions before. The acclaimed Demon’s Souls remake was actually developed by Bluepoint Games. However, Miyazaki has subtly indicated that there could be an in-house remake project in the works. In a February 2024 interview, Miyazaki expressed his view that remakes are valuable due to modern hardware’s ability to enhance visual quality and accessibility for older games. A month prior to this interview, Miyazaki mentioned that FromSoftware was working on several projects simultaneously.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that some fellow gamers subtly express their approval for remakes by connecting two sentiments into one. These days, remakes have become so common in the gaming industry that it wouldn’t surprise me if FromSoftware decided to hop on the bandwagon too. Companies like Capcom and Naughty Dog have reaped great benefits from successfully remaking their classic games, and with some of FromSoftware’s foundational titles starting to feel a bit dated, they could potentially gain even more by giving these games a fresh coat of paint.

Dark Souls 2 Could Be Due for a Remake

Among potential candidates for a remake, Dark Souls 2 could be a strong choice, though it’s not as widely recognized. Released in 2014 and later ported to newer platforms through Scholar of the First Sin, it is arguably the least visually impressive game in the trilogy. The gameplay mechanics deviated significantly from the franchise’s traditional design, and while its world-building and lore were still top-notch, its mechanics sparked debate among players. A full remake would give FromSoftware a chance to upgrade the game’s graphics and bring modern improvements to what is often considered the weakest entry in the series.

In essence, the expansion pack “Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin” predominantly focused on enhancing the gameplay and optimizing performance, but it didn’t significantly upgrade the visual quality for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions.

Among all the “Souls” series games, it seems most logical to remake “Dark Souls 2”. While “Dark Souls 3” was only released in 2016 and its visuals remain impressive, a remake could potentially feel repetitive since “Dark Souls” itself was remastered in 2018. Given that these steps have already been taken for the other games, it appears that “Dark Souls 2” would gain the most from an upgrade, especially filling in the graphical gaps that the “Scholar of the First Sin” pseudo-remaster didn’t address.

Why Project FMC Probably Won’t Be Bloodborne (Unfortunately)

Discussions that involve “FromSoftware” and “remake” often revolve around the game _Bloodborne_. Released in 2015, this dark action RPG is still exclusive to PlayStation 4 and limited to a 30 FPS frame rate. For years, fans have requested an upgrade or remaster, but FromSoftware has remained silent on the matter. Miyazaki himself has mentioned that they don’t own the IP, leaving the decision in Sony’s hands. Sony’s harsh actions against recent _Bloodborne_ fan projects hint at their desire to protect the IP, but so far, they haven’t made any significant moves with it.

The lack of action regarding Bloodborne has become quite notable and even humorously recognizable. Despite its acclaimed success in both commercial and critical arenas, Bloodborne continues to be one of Sony’s least exploited resources. If a remake does materialize, it’s probable that it will originate from another studio altogether. However, recent legal maneuvers hint that the intellectual property isn’t idle. Whether this leads to anything substantial is yet to be determined.

If it isn’t Dark Souls, it appears that the project might be related to Armored Core. Given the success of Armored Core 6 and its multi-platform status, there’s a good chance that FMC could either be a new take on Dark Souls 2 or an expansion for Armored Core, or possibly something different altogether. With leaks suggesting it’s quite advanced, fans may not have to wait long to find out more.
