New Game is Basically the Anti-Stardew Valley

Okay, so Stardew Valley basically kicked off this whole wave of relaxing farming games, right? But this new game, Crop, seems like it’s going in a totally different direction – it’s not about cozy vibes at all! Stardew’s been super popular for over a decade now, and the creator is still updating it and the modding community is huge. A bunch of games have tried to be like Stardew since then, but Crop looks like it might actually do something different with the farming sim formula.

Though Harvest Moon 64 from 1999 helped start the trend of relaxing, comforting games, Stardew Valley is now considered the most important modern example. It’s the game that most farming simulators are compared to, and it likely sparked the recent surge in popularity of cozy games. Because Stardew Valley has inspired so many other games, it was inevitable that developers would eventually try to create something completely different within the genre.

Crop Looks Like a Lovecraftian Stardew Valley

Carbonara Games revealed its debut title, Crop, a spooky farming simulator, on April 8, 2026. It’s clearly inspired by Stardew Valley, putting you in charge of a rundown farm in a new town where you’ll fix things up, grow crops, and get to know the locals. But Crop sets itself apart with elements of Lovecraftian horror, similar to games like Bloodborne and Amnesia. Expect a disturbing atmosphere, unsettling fog, and glimpses of frightening images, occult symbols, and even a corpse buried on your land.

Similar to Stardew Valley, Crop was created by a small team – just three developers at Carbonara Games. They’re being published by 11 Bit Studios, known for successful indie games like The Alters, Death Howl, and Moonlighter, which suggests Crop has strong potential. Combining cosmic horror with the relaxing gameplay of farming, Crop could be a great choice for Stardew Valley players who want a slightly more intense experience.

In the upcoming game Crop, players will restore an abandoned farm by planting, watering, and harvesting crops. They’ll also explore a mysterious village and uncover its secrets, while figuring out how they came to be there. Unlike the cheerful atmosphere of Stardew Valley, Crop has a darker, more unsettling tone. It blends different gameplay styles in a way that’s similar to Dredge, which successfully combined relaxing and creepy elements in a fishing adventure. If Crop can achieve the same balance, Carbonara Games may have created something truly unique.

Okay, so I’m really excited about this new game, Crop! Carbonara Games hasn’t announced when it’s coming out yet, but they say they’ll share more info soon. Honestly, with Haunted Chocolatier possibly being delayed until 2030, Crop might actually release before it, which is awesome if you’re a Stardew Valley fan like me and are getting impatient! But even if you don’t care about Stardew, it looks super interesting as its own thing, so if you’re into indie horror, definitely keep an eye out for updates.
