As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours mastering the art of platform fighting with Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros., I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement about Byte Breakers, the new battle royale game from Odyssey Interactive. Having dabbled in Omega Strikers, the developer’s previous venture into the arena-style fight scene, I’m intrigued by their decision to retool it into something reminiscent of my beloved Super Smash Bros.

Odyssey Interactive, the creators behind “Omega Strikers,” have unveiled a new game called “Byte Breakers“. This upcoming title appears to follow a similar concept to a battle royale version of Nintendo’s popular platform fighting game, “Super Smash Bros.“. As the original “Super Smash Bros.” series has paved the way for the platform fighting game genre, numerous games have attempted to incorporate its distinctive features. While some clones of “Smash” have been more successful than others, it’s worth noting that the dedicated and passionate community surrounding “Super Smash Bros.” remains strong. The latest contender in this genre will be “Byte Breakers“, developed by Odyssey Interactive.

Odyssey Interactive gained significant recognition for its free-to-play Steam sensation, Omega Strikers, a lively 3v3 arena game featuring vibrant characters that resembles Nintendo’s Mario Strikers. Unfortunately, the debut of Omega Strikers was ill-timed. The game was released during a period when gamers were growing weary of live-service models, making it challenging for Omega Strikers to compete with more established titles in the genre. Consequently, updates for the game gradually decreased, with its last character added in October 2023. Now, Odyssey is repurposing the Omega Strikers franchise into a new title, Byte Breakers, which emulates the style of Super Smash Bros. and retains most of the original characters.

On September 11, Byte Breakers was unveiled by Odyssey for the first time. A public trial on Steam followed suit on September 12. This game shares the platform fighter mechanics with the Super Smash Bros. series, requiring players to maintain their position on floating platforms and avoid being knocked off. What sets it apart is its integration of the battle royale genre, allowing up to 40 players to engage simultaneously. The objective is to be the last team remaining alive, employing a range of items, team support moves, and in-game power-ups that may appear during gameplay.

Byte Breakers is an Omega Strikers Battle Royale Meets Super Smash Bros.

Characters hailing from the game Omega Strikers, including Nao, Ai, Mi, Juliette, and Luna, are part of the team in Byte Breakers. It’s important to note that this is an early version of the game, a playtest prototype. The developers encourage players to give it a spin, offering their feedback so they can determine if Byte Breakers is heading in the right direction for them.

Byte Breakers Playtest Schedule (September 12-16):

  • Servers turn on at 9am PT (12pm EST) each day and turn off at 3am PT (6am EST) each morning.
  • Ends 3am PT Monday

Byte Breakers is inviting everyone on Steam to participate in its open playtest, starting at 9 am PT and ending at 3 am PT daily from September 12-16, 2024. This playtest will continue over the weekend. As of now, no official release date has been announced for this new title by Odyssey. Let’s see if Byte Breakers can carve out its own niche among the popular games similar to Super Smash Bros. that are currently available.
