Level-5’s new game, Holy Horror Mansion, seems perfect for fans of Nintendo’s Pokemon. Those unfamiliar with it should know that Holy Horror Mansion is similar in style to Level-5’s Yo-kai Watch series, which was originally created to compete with Pokemon. While Pokemon remains incredibly popular worldwide, Yo-kai Watch hasn’t maintained the same level of success in recent years.
The most recent mainline Yo-kai Watch game came out in 2019 but wasn’t released in English, probably because Yo-kai Watch 3 didn’t sell well outside of Japan. Despite declining interest in the Yo-kai Watch series, Level-5 is creating a new game that feels like a successor to its competitor, Pokémon.
Holy Horror Mansion is a Monster-Catching Game With a Gorgeous Art Style
Level-5’s Holy Horror Mansion feels a lot like Pokémon or Yo-kai Watch, but boasts significantly improved graphics. We first learned about the game last year with a story trailer introducing the concept and its ghost creatures. A newer trailer recently showcased actual gameplay footage.
The latest trailer for Holy Horror Mansion follows the main character, Ten Lordland, as they explore a charming town built with a diorama-like art style, taking pictures with a fluffy, pink companion. They soon encounter a living recycling bin, hinting at a Pokémonstyle battle – a feature revealed in the first trailer. While a release date and platforms haven’t been announced, Holy Horror Mansion appears to be what Pokémon could look like with significantly improved graphics. Given the criticism recent Pokémon games like Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A* have received for their visuals, Level-5 seems to be targeting a strong, underserved area with this new title.
Surprisingly, the original trailer for Holy Horror Mansion, released last year, showed us more of the game than the newest one. It gave a better look at the creatures you’ll encounter, which are essentially everyday objects haunted and brought to life. For example, a piggybank becomes a pig-like monster, and you’ll find monsters based on candles and teapots. What’s really interesting is that you can even create new monsters by combining objects – like merging a pen and an apple, or turning a pile of paperclips into a dragon!
Holy Horror Mansion seems to have some really cool dungeons to explore. The latest trailer showed us the town, but an earlier one revealed a dungeon actually made of cake! It’s a pretty unique take on the monster-collecting genre, and while it’s too soon to tell if it will be as popular as games like Pokemon or Yo-kai Watch, what we’ve seen so far looks great. Level-5 also has a new Professor Layton game coming out this year, but hopefully we won’t have to wait long after that to play Holy Horror Mansion.
