As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t contain my excitement when one of the highlights at the Summer Game Fest 2025 Livestream unveiled an upcoming fantasy Real-Time Strategy game: Game of Thrones: War of Westeros. Although the cinematic trailer didn’t reveal much detail, it was enough to ignite the anticipation of many fans, including myself, for a possible return to the captivating realm of Ice and Fire.
The teaser showcases Jon Snow engaged in combat with the Night King, as Jamie Lannister and his troops move further away. Following a physical fight, the Night King emerges victorious, only for Jon to be brought back to life as a White Walker. Although no actual gameplay was demonstrated, the trailer confirmed that “War of Westeros” is a real-time strategy game and plans to launch on Steam in 2026.
A Good Game of Thrones Title At Last?
After the somewhat lackluster debut and divisive opinions about Game of Thrones: Kingsroad a month ago, it’s understandable if you feel hesitant upon learning that another endeavor is underway to adapt the renowned fantasy saga for video games yet again.
Among all the Game of Thrones video games released thus far, it’s only the 2014 Telltale series that received generally favorable feedback. However, this game didn’t come close to matching the success of its The Walking Dead equivalent.
In another way of saying it, if there’s one type of game that the Game of Thrones series aligns perfectly with, it might just be the Real-Time Strategy (RTS) genre. The fact that popular modifications for games such as Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord and Crusader Kings 3, which set them in the world of Westeros, prove that its rich universe and history can be effectively translated into a video game, yet it appears to be quite challenging when dealing with licensed titles.
As a gamer, I’m eagerly anticipating if Game of Thrones: War of Westeros can finally shatter the lingering jinx of underwhelming Game of Thrones adaptations. Fingers crossed, but if they manage to deliver, this could very well become one of the most outstanding real-time strategy (RTS) games in recent memory.
