The fresh trailer for “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-” (which you pronounce as “G-Quacks”) has been released, marking the newest addition to the renowned “Gundam” series.

This fresh tale is situated in a cosmic colony, sparking speculation that it serves as an “alternative” or “hypothetical” continuation of the original Mobile Suit Gundam (also recognized as Gundam 0079) series. Although Mobile Suit Gundam not set within the Universal Century does depict space colonies, they are less prevalent compared to those found in the UC. Additionally, whispers hint that this series draws some inspiration from 0079.

Additionally, the latest clip provides additional glimpses of the film, and the catchy tune, “Plazma,” by Kenshi Yonezu.

Performance At Japanese Box Office

The movie had its premiere in Japanese cinemas on January 17th and generated approximately 3.8 million US dollars during the weekend (January 17-19). It ranked first at the Japanese box office, selling more than 352,500 tickets.

The opening segment includes the initial four episodes of the yet-to-be-aired TV show on Japanese television.

Release in North American Theaters

From where I stand, it’s exciting news for me as a Gundam fan! Starting February 28, 2025, fellow enthusiasts in North America will have the opportunity to catch the movie on the big screen. GKIDS has secured the cinema rights to the film across North America.

Since Toho is handling distribution of the movie within Japan, and given that GKIDS (recently acquired by Toho) likely holds a strong position during negotiations, it’s possible that this decision to license the prologue to GKIDS hints at grand ambitions for this series.

The narrative centers around Amate Yuzuriha, who enters the unlawful Clan Wars (equipped with mobile suits) following an encounter with refugee Nyaan. In these conflicts, Amate operates the GQuuuuuuX under the pseudonym “Machu.” Yet, this decision leads to a greater peril than they had anticipated for both of them.

The series “GQuuuuuuX” is jointly produced by Studio Khara, known for “Rebuild of Evangelion“. In terms of direction, it’s overseen by Kazuya Tsurumaki, who co-directed both “The End of Evangelion” and “Rebuild of Evangelion”. The scriptwriting team consists of Hideaki Anno, the creator of Evangelion, and Yoji Enokido, who has worked on series like “Revolutionary Girl Utena”, “Sailor Moon SuperS”, and “Ouran Host Club” in the past.
