As a seasoned gamer who has been around since the days of floppy disks and dial-up internet connections, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia upon hearing about Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era. This game takes me back to my youth, where evenings were spent strategizing, building empires, and vanquishing foes in the magical realm of Enroth.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that at Gamescom, Ubisoft unveiled “Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era,” the latest addition to our beloved series, marking its eighth mainline game! In an official communique, Ubisoft guaranteed that this fresh strategy title would honor the franchise’s traditional values while seamlessly blending in contemporary elements that will captivate both veterans and novices alike.
In 1995, the spin-off game “Heroes of Might and Magic” hit the market, diverging from its predecessor “Might and Magic.” Unlike “Might and Magic,” which focused on first-person dungeon exploration, the “Heroes of Might and Magic” series is mainly about tactics. Players navigate an extensive map to gather resources and expand their castle using a construction management system. Within the castle, they can recruit units from their faction for turn-based battles on a grid battlefield against monsters and rival heroes. The goal is to defeat them to secure victory. The latest installment in the main series, “Might & Magic Heroes 7,” was launched in 2015.
Approximately a decade following the release of the seventh game, Ubisoft has announced “Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era”. This upcoming game is being developed by Unfrozen, creators of “Iratus: Lord of the Dead”. The new “Heroes of Might and Magic” game is set to debut in Early Access on Steam in the first half of 2025, marking the franchise’s 30th anniversary. Ubisoft’s official website has revealed additional details about the upcoming title. Despite being the eighth installment, “Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era” serves as a prequel to the original “Heroes of Might and Magic”. The game will transpire on the continent of Jadame, reacquainting players with the world of Enroth.
Ubisoft Announces New Heroes of Might and Magic Game
In terms of gameplay, “Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era” aims to preserve the traditional essence of the franchise while introducing novel enhancements. Apart from the conventional turn-based map exploration, city administration, and troop enlistment, players will enjoy a greater degree of control over their characters during leveling up. Characters in this edition possess faction-specific skills, and artifacts can now be assembled into sets, providing more significant effects when multiple pieces are worn. A fresh skill learning system has been implemented to boost personalization and RPG aspects within the strategy game.
Eric Damian-Vernet, Ubisoft’s Brand Director, has shared that the upcoming game “Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era” takes substantial inspiration from the popular franchise title “Heroes of Might and Magic 3”, which remains one of the most played games in the series to this day. Additionally, it incorporates elements from the second and fifth installments. The game will offer a narrative-focused campaign and multiple multiplayer options. A key feature is the random map generator, enabling up to eight players to participate in intricate and engaging multiplayer battles. For those who prefer a simpler experience, one-on-one duels are also an option. Further details about “Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era” will be unveiled prior to its Early Access debut.
