At San Diego Comic-Con 2025, HBO unveiled an initial teaser for their series It: Welcome to Derry, offering fans a glimpse of its eerie and pulse-quickening ambiance, fueling anticipation for one of the most eagerly awaited horror TV shows of the year. But hidden within the 2-minute trailer is an Easter egg from Stephen King’s other renowned novel or film.
It appears that the story returning to the town of Derry in Maine is shaping up to be another chilling tale about the infamous, terrifying town where children are terrorized and slaughtered by the sinister clown known as Pennywise. Set in 1962, the upcoming series serves as a prequel to Andy Muschietti’s It films, offering a more in-depth look into the world of “It”. Bill Skarsgård will reprise his role as the murderous clown. As in Stephen King’s novel, ‘IT’ emerges every 27 years to strike, and Welcome to Derry aims to unveil another instance when the bloodthirsty clown went on a rampage. The series boasts an impressive cast including Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, Rudy Mancuso, and of course, Skarsgård. In its latest teaser, It: Welcome to Derry does not hold back when it comes to showcasing its horror elements, setting itself up for a formidable challenge to meet expectations.
It: Welcome to Derry Trailer Contains a Shawshank Redemption Easter Egg

In the recently released teaser for HBO Max’s upcoming Stephen King TV series titled It: Welcome to Derry, an interesting nod to one of King’s iconic films, The Shawshank Redemption, has been spotted. At approximately 57 seconds into the trailer, keen-eyed viewers can catch a glimpse of a bus bearing the inscription “Shawshank State Prison,” which is a nod to the fictional prison that featured prominently in one of King’s most poignant stories.
Although stories like “Welcome to Derry” and “The Shawshank Redemption”, both set in Maine – a frequent setting in King’s works – may seem unrelated at first glance, there are surprising connections between them. For instance, Mike Hanlon’s father, Billy Hanlon, appears as a prison guard in “The Shawshank Redemption”, and in “IT: Chapter Two”, Pennywise references Jack Torrance from “The Shining” with his quote, “Here’s Johnny!”. This suggests that these stories may be more intertwined than we initially think due to the intricate multiverse King has created.
It appears from the latest trailer that Shawshank may assume a more significant part than previously seen, given its connection to one of Pennywise’s victims’ family members who served time there. With the first season spanning nine episodes and three seasons planned, each delving into distinct time periods, viewers could gain a richer understanding of the iconic prison and how it intertwines with the lives of Maine residents.
It: Welcome to Derry is scheduled to be released on HBO sometime in October 2025.
