The newest LEGO game, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, won’t have online co-op play. This is the first LEGO title developed by TT Games in four years, and the fourth main installment in the LEGO Batman series. It marks the LEGO video game line’s return to the DC Universe since LEGO DC Super-Villains came out in 2018. Notably, this game will be the first LEGO title from TT Games to be built using Unreal Engine 5. The studio previously used its own in-house engine for 2022’s LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, a decision that caused some internal debate.
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is a new direction for LEGO games. Unlike previous titles with huge rosters, this game focuses on just seven characters from the Batman world. The combat system seems to take cues from the popular Batman: Arkham series, offering a simplified, action-packed experience for younger players. With designs pulled straight from Batman comics and movies, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight aims to be a celebration of everything fans love about the Batman universe.
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Forgoes Online Co-Op
WB Games has announced that the new LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight game won’t have online co-op. Players will still be able to play together locally—just like in other LEGO games—but TT Games isn’t including the option to team up online. If you want to play with a friend or family member, you’ll need to play side-by-side on the same screen.
The upcoming LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight game won’t require an internet connection to play, and you won’t need subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online. The game also won’t include any in-game purchases, so players can experience the full adventure without spending extra money. However, you will need to connect to the internet to download updates when they become available.
As a big LEGO fan, I wasn’t totally shocked to hear that LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight doesn’t have online co-op. None of the other LEGO games have had it, and honestly, the fun has always been playing with friends and family right on the same couch. Plus, LEGO games are super popular with kids, so TT Games probably wants to keep things safe and make sure everyone’s having a good time in a controlled environment.
It’s especially frustrating that this new LEGO game doesn’t include online co-op. Because it’s an open-world LEGO Batman game – and therefore more expansive than usual – letting players team up online would be a great way for them to enjoy the game whenever they have time, without needing to coordinate in-person playdates. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight promises a thrilling experience for Batman fans of all ages, and with this game already trying new things, adding online co-op would be a fantastic way to move the series forward.
