As an ardent manga enthusiast with over a decade of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Masahiro Anbe is a creative force to be reckoned with! His latest announcement of his new series, “Akuma de Fukei,” has me beyond excited!

If you’ve enjoyed his previous works like “Squid Girl” and “Atsumare! Fushigi Kenkyū-bu,” then you’re in for a treat with this new romantic comedy featuring a demon policewoman. The plot twist of an everyday cop falling for a demon, while trying to send her back to the underworld, sounds like it’s straight out of a classic rom-com movie!

I’ve followed Anbe since his early days and have seen him grow as a mangaka. His attention to detail, unique storylines, and engaging characters are what keep me coming back for more. With “Akuma de Fukei,” I have no doubt that he will continue to deliver the same high-quality content we’ve come to expect from him.

Now, let’s hope that Eclair, our demon policewoman, doesn’t turn out to be as much of a squid wrangler as Squid Girl! (I can just imagine the chaos if she does!) I’ll definitely be counting down the days until June 6th, 2025, when the first volume hits shelves. Until then, I’ll be rewatching “Squid Girl” on Crunchyroll for the umpteenth time!

The creator of the manga “Squid Girl,” Masahiro Anbe, has revealed plans for a new series titled “Akuma de Fukei” (informally known as “Demon Policewoman”). This upcoming series is slated to debut its first volume on June 6th, 2025, through Kodansha’s Young Maga KC Special imprint. The initial volume of the series has already been listed for pre-order on Japanese online marketplace Rakuten.

Following a post by Anbe himself on December 6th (previously Twitter), an official announcement has been made. Initially, Anbe had merely hinted at a forthcoming series, providing no further details. However, now, through Rakuten’s listing page, we have access to the title of the new series, a brief summary of the plot, and a sneak peek at the characters.

Manga by Masahiro Anbe

A Hard-Working Mangaka

Masahiro Anbe boasts two other acclaimed manga series in his portfolio. Among them, arguably the most renowned is “Squid Girl“, which initially appeared in Weekly Shōnen Champion back in 2007. The storyline concluded close to a decade later, in February 2016. Interestingly, “Squid Girl” was transformed into a two-season anime, premiered on Crunchyroll in 2010 and 2011, and simultaneously broadcast as it aired in Japan. To this day, you can stream “Squid Girl” on Crunchyroll, over a decade later, along with HIDIVE.

Apart from the popular manga series “Squid Girl,” Anbe also created another successful series titled “Atsumare! Fushigi Kenkyū-bu,” or “Assemble! Mystery Research Club.” This series was published in “Weekly Shōnen Champion” starting from September 2016, which was seven months after the conclusion of “Squid Girl.” Atsumare! Fushigi Kenkyū-bu came to an end in July 2024, and at this moment, there are no plans for an anime adaptation. Now, close to a year since its ending, Anbe is back with his new series.

Akuma de Fukei

A Demon Policewoman’s Tale (or Tail?)

You can discover the details for the initial installment of “Akuma de Fukei” on Rakuten, as they’ve provided us with the maximum amount of information regarding this fresh series. The manga’s synopsis in the listing goes like this (in English translation):

The mastermind behind “Squid Girl” and “Atsumare! Fushigi Kenkyū-bu” steps into the realm of everyday romantic comedies, featuring a seductive policewoman from the netherworld. Eclair, a demon, traverses dimensions to a quaint town’s police station in pursuit of a villainous individual worthy of her servitude. Her target, Daichi Kuwabara, is a policeman with a questionable countenance that captivates Eclair. She aims to eliminate Daichi, while he seeks to banish Eclair back to the demon world. However, Daichi finds himself unable to abandon Eclair due to her unpredictable nature.

As I take a glance, I find myself gazing upon the initial artwork unveiled for “Akuma de Fukei”. This captivating piece showcases the characters, Eclair and Daichi, clad in their police uniforms. A striking detail catches my eye – Eclair’s artwork bears a noticeable demon tail.

As a long-time fan of manga, I am genuinely excited about the upcoming release of “Akuma de Fukei” on June 6th, 2025, especially since it is a Japanese original series. Having been in the manga community for quite some time, I’ve learned that the initial Japanese version of a manga often sets the tone for its popularity and success, as was the case with several iconic series such as “One Piece” or “Naruto.”

However, it is essential to note that this release will be for the Japanese version. But given that Kodansha has picked up the series, I am confident that an English version will follow suit at some point in the future. The first volume contains 192 pages and is priced at 792 yen ($5 USD), which seems like a reasonable price for a manga of this caliber.

I have high expectations for “Akuma de Fukei” and eagerly await its English release, as I am always on the lookout for new and exciting series to immerse myself in.

Akuma de Fukei will release on June 6th, 2024.
