New Mechanics & Features Confirmed For Hollow Knight Silksong

In the long-awaited trailer unveiled on August 20, 2025, for the highly anticipated game titled “Hollow Knight Silksong”, viewers got a sneak peek at fresh footage showcasing novel features and gameplay mechanisms within “Silksong”. Over the past seven years of development, Team Cherry has transformed “Silksong” from an expansion pack for “Hollow Knight” into a distinct standalone title. Unlike its predecessor, the original indie favorite, “Silksong” promises to be quite unique.

Unlike Hollow Knight with just one central town, Silksong offers multiple towns for exploration. Instead of Charms, Hornet can utilize a variety of Tools and Crests, some even originating from the game’s innovative new crafting system, to boost her stats and combat abilities.

Throughout the years, Team Cherry has hinted at numerous fresh features in the sequel to Hollow Knight through trailers, interviews, and various official announcements. This compilation outlines some of the most significant new mechanics that have been officially verified for Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Multiple Towns

Silksong Will Have Numerous Town Hubs Like Dirtmouth

In the game titled “Hollow Knight,” the primary town where the character begins their journey is called Dirtmouth. This significant settlement greets the player right at the start, serving as a base from which the knight sets off on their exploration of Hallownest, located beneath the well to the east of the town, for the remainder of their adventure.

In the game titled “Silksong“, Hornet is able to visit several town centers such as Dirtmouth on her journey towards the summit of a spectral kingdom. Here, she encounters fresh characters, interacts with merchants, and takes part in various town-related activities.

In the trailer for Hollow Knight Silksong that premiered on August 20, 2025, we caught a glimpse of the game’s world map. The map revealed several place names such as Pilgrim’s Rest, Bone Bottom, Bellhart, and Halfway Home, which might be the titles of some new towns found in Silksong.

A Crafting System

A Crafting Kit Was Teased In The Silksong Release Trailer

Among the exciting novel additions in the upcoming game, Silksong, unlike its predecessor Hollow Knight, introduces a crafting mechanism. This feature was hinted at in the August 20th Silksong trailer, where we see Hornet acquiring a Crafting Kit. With this kit, she can fabricate more precise, sharper, and lethal tools, offering a sneak peek into how the crafting system in Silksong is expected to function.

The system for creating items was first mentioned in the game’s description on various platforms in 2019, yet up until now, we haven’t had a chance to witness it in play. It has been discovered that Hornet can make tools, traps, gadgets, and other devices that enhance her combat skills or provide additional bonuses.

Tools, Traps, Mechanisms, & Buffs

Displayed Below Hornet’s HP

As I was eagerly watching the August 20th release trailer, my eyes were drawn towards the Health Pack (HP) bar of the game during the gameplay segments. To my intrigue, within red and white circles, there were a series of icons visible below Hornet’s HP bar.

In the initial announcement trailer, we were given a sneak peek at the Tools and Crest screen where it appears that Hornet can equip items into one of three slots. These items seem to correspond with the icons displayed below Hornet’s HP bar in the new trailer, leaving me excited to discover what each item does!

In the game Hollow Knight, the knight character could utilize spells and charms to enhance his skills passively or actively. However, Hornet from the same game has the ability to equip traps, tools, and other items that provide temporary buffs when she takes a seat at a bench. For instance, she can use an explosive Pimpillo, sharp Tacks, and a throwable expanding needle-shuriken weapon as part of her equipment.

Acrobatic Combat & Traversal Moves

Hornet Has A Variety Of Combat Moves & Mid-Air Combos

As a dedicated cinema-goer of video games, I must say that the knight in Hollow Knight, while possessing unique abilities and spells, lacked the intricate combo system that I’ve grown to appreciate. In comparison, the combat variety and fluid movement options showcased in the Silksong trailers have truly piqued my interest, promising a more dynamic and engaging experience.

Although the Knight has restricted movement and fighting capabilities, Hornet offers more dynamic gameplay with sprinting, grappling, chaining attacks, and aerial combos. She can even dance nimbly around enemies. While some in-game time is required to unlock these abilities, it’s evident that playing as Hornet offers a unique gaming experience compared to the Knight.

New NPC Quests

New Silksong Quests Tied To New Characters & Systems

As a cinema-loving enthusiast immersed in the world of video games, I’d put it this way: In the captivating realm of Hollow Knight, I, as the knight, was presented with tasks by various characters scattered across Hallownest. These quests often involved tracking down foes, gathering lost treasures, or completing distinct missions to bring them to a close. The intriguing quest system from Hollow Knight returns in Silksong, but this time it’s been given a delightful spin.

In contrast to the original game, which sometimes had unclear mission goals, the quests in Silksong will be structured using a clear quest system, providing straightforward guidance and ways to monitor progress along the way.

In the 2019 unveiling trailer, a character known as the Moss Temple Druid tasks Hornet with fulfilling a series of assignments. These tasks include Hunts where you need to pursue a particular enemy, and Gather missions, which involve Hornet venturing out into the world to locate specific herbs or other items.

Binding Replaces The Focus Mechanic

To Heal, Hornet Must Bind Silk To Herself

In the freshly released game ‘Silksong’, one novel feature swaps out the healing system from its predecessor, ‘Hollow Knight’. Despite this change, it operates in much the same fashion. Pressing and holding the Bind button allows Hornet to utilize a specific portion of her silk meter to regenerate her health.

In the game Hollow Knight, there was a mechanic called Focus that used roughly one-third of the character’s energy bar to restore a single HP point. It seems that in Silksong, Hornet binds silk to herself instead, and just like the Focus system, attacking enemies will replenish a small amount of the Bind meter.

Hundreds Of New Enemies & Bosses

More Than 200 New Enemies & 40 New Bosses

One standout feature in Silksong is its impressive array of innovative enemy designs, boasting countless new ones and numerous bosses set to debut with the game. Some of these intimidating adversaries were teased in the initial 2019 trailer, such as a colossal bone-wielding boss, a titanic grub, an eccentric dancing boss with a flaming red mane, among many others.

In the trailer released on August 20, 2025, we were treated to a sneak peek of new bosses, such as a nimble swordsman and a colossal fiery spider. During the Gamescom 2025 demo, players battled the Moss-covered Moss Mother at the end of the first section. Additionally, numerous enemies have been unveiled that don’t appear to be repeats from the original Hollow Knight game.

A Brand-New, Expansive Map

Instead Of Delving Underground, Hornet Must Ascend Upward

In the game Hollow Knight, players explore the subterranean realm of Hallownest. Conversely, in Silksong, players aim to climb to the summit of an unnamed, eerie kingdom. This means that Silksong offers a fresh map with entirely new destinations distinct from those found in the original game.

In my perspective, while it’s likely that we’ll catch a peek of Hallownest in Silksong or maybe spot some links to Hollow Knight, the atmosphere and storyline of Silksong seem distinct and are expected to have minimal connections with the initial game.

A Grappling Hook… Or Needle?

Hornet’s Most Iconic Movement Skill, Now In Players’ Hands

During your encounters with Hornet within the game ‘Hollow Knight’, she tends to swiftly depart by launching her needle on a thread, disappearing off-screen after our interaction. Notably, Hornet is known for her nimble movements, and in the game ‘Silksong’, players will have an opportunity to employ these agile abilities themselves, including the distinctive grappling hook-like skill.

With a Hornet’s Needle, you can draw her towards distinct objects or even lure enemies closer for additional assaults. It might require unlocking these capabilities as you advance through the game, but it’s exciting to know that Hornet’s boss maneuvers from Hollow Knight are mirrored in her moveset within Silksong.
