New Metro Awakening Trailer At State Of Play

Key Takeaways

  • Metro Awakening, the upcoming VR Metro game, has been set to release on November 7th.
  • This spin-off from the main franchise looks like a fitting VR return to Metro, with both action and horror.
  • Immersive games with meticulous mechanics, like what’s found in the Metro series, are easy fits for a VR adaptation.

As a long-time fan of the Metro series, I must say that the latest announcement for Metro Awakening VR has sent a chill down my spine and a rush of adrenaline through my veins. Having grown up exploring the dark, claustrophobic tunnels of the Metro universe, the prospect of stepping into those familiar environments in virtual reality is nothing short of exhilarating.

During the recent PlayStation State of Play event, we received a trailer indicating the launch date for the forthcoming virtual reality game Metro Awakening. This title is set to be launched on November 7th on PlayStation VR 2, Oculus Quest 2 (Metaquest), and Steam VR.

Previously, we’ve encountered the captivating fusion of Metro and Stalker’s post-apocalyptic Russian ambiance with the engrossing aspects of VR, as showcased in titles like Into The Radius. It’s delightful to witness a fresh perspective on one of the most intriguing upcoming VR games on the horizon.

In the same vein as past Metro games, the newest peek at Awakening delivers a chilling dose of suspenseful horror and pulse-pounding action. This experience takes place within the confines of subterranean tunnels and metro stations beneath a Russia shrouded in a nuclear winter.

In contrast to the preceding Metro games, where Awakening serves as a spin-off rather than a continuation of Artyom’s story, its main campaign is set within the same environment. However, it delves into the history of Khan, a character who appeared in the earlier Metro games.

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel that the Metro series is tailor-made for a virtual reality (VR) experience. With its already immersive features like detailed inventory management, separate controls for face masks and watches, and engaging gun mechanics, these elements seem perfectly designed to transport me into the post-apocalyptic world of the Metro games when I don a VR headset.

The newest preview showcases the game’s application of psychological effects, including thrilling hallucination sequences similar to those seen in previous games like Metro Exodus (similar to Last Light). Since parts of Metro have explored science fiction territories extensively, we can’t wait to see what more they plan to offer.

Instead of expecting a new VR title as preferred by many fans, this trailer indicates that Awakening will offer an authentic Metro gaming experience. At minimum, the developers have assured us that a standalone mainline Metro game is in development.
