As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Nintendo’s upcoming release, “Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club,” has certainly piqued my interest. While it’s not typically what one associates with Nintendo, I appreciate their willingness to venture into darker territories and tackle mature themes.
As a thrilled fan, I’m eagerly anticipating “Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club,” an exclusive title coming soon to Nintendo Switch. Recently, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rated this game, revealing it contains unexpectedly graphic violence. Initially teased with a mysterious video in July, the game was unveiled as a revival of the beloved “Famicom Detective Club” series, marking 27 years since its last release and slated for August 27th. Unlike Nintendo’s usual family-friendly games, “Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club” is a visual novel adventure that challenges players to unravel a gripping murder mystery.
In the Famicom Detective Club series, players are challenged to unravel a mystery, with the central event usually being a murder. Similarly, in the upcoming game Emio – The Smiling Man, the Utsugi Detective Agency is enlisted by the police to solve a murder case. This crime involves the demise of a local junior high school student who was strangled and found with a paper bag over her head. The prime suspect appears to be linked to the regional urban legend of Emio the Smiling Man, a man wearing a paper bag who is rumored to kill teenage girls. Prior to its August 27 release, the game’s ESRB rating was disclosed, and it did not shy away from outlining the grim nature of the story.
The rating for the game ‘Emio’, given by the ESRB, was published on their website, categorizing it as M (Mature). This classification is due to the graphic depictions of violence and mature themes that are central to this visual novel. Notably, the game includes portrayals of murder, a father brutally hitting his children, a human corpse hanging by a tie, and a character using scissors to mutilate himself. Other violent aspects involve corpses submerged in blood, as well as narratives delving into topics such as child abuse, suicide, and self-harm. Consequently, ‘Emio’ may emerge as one of Nintendo’s most noteworthy M-rated games.
Past Ratings of Famicom Detective Club Games
As a devoted fan, I’ve been following the Famicom Detective Club series, even delving into the remakes of its initial installments. Similar to the game Emio, you find yourself immersed in a murder mystery, and the depiction of corpses maintains that same raw, intense style. Yet, unlike Emio, which is rated M for Mature, The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind were given a T for Teen rating, making them slightly less intense but still engaging for a broader audience.
Although Emio – The Smiling Man boasts an anime aesthetic, it’s highly probable that the game won’t soften its portrayal of murder victims or shy away from violent subject matter. In fact, Emio is slated to be one of the most anticipated Nintendo Switch titles in 2024, releasing even before games like The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and Mario & Luigi: Brothership.
