Zombies are arguably the best video game enemies of all time. They’ve appeared in almost every type of game, from story-focused adventures like The Last of Us and The Walking Dead, to fast-paced shooters like Dead Nation, open-world titles like Dead Island 2, and even survival modes in games like Call of Duty Zombies. Popular games like DayZ and Dying Light have already proven how engaging zombie games can be, and now The Left Behind aims to capture the best parts of both those experiences for Steam players.
As a fan of both DayZ and Dying Light, I know they offer really different zombie survival experiences, so I didn’t expect The Left Behind to be a perfect blend of both. What I’ve found is that it doesn’t try to be! It doesn’t have the hardcore PvP stuff from DayZ or the crazy parkour of Dying Light. Instead, it really focuses on that feeling of exploring a detailed world – the way the game looks is a big part of it, and it’s done from a similar camera angle as DayZ. Plus, just like Dying Light, nighttime is genuinely terrifying! I’m hoping that, combined with the option to play alone or with up to three friends, it all adds up to something really special.
According to the Steam page for The Left Behind, the complete game will be released for players on July 27, 2026. A demo is available now if you want to try it out.

The Left Behind Seems Like a Hodgepodge of the Zombie Genre’s Best Elements
This new Steam game seems to be combining all the best parts of its genre. While it won’t have a big, cinematic story like The Last of Us – likely only sharing a similar title due to budget constraints – it does offer a compelling mystery to unravel. Beyond that, you can team up with friends in a co-op survival mode, where you’ll need to work together (or compete!) to survive as long as possible and manage your resources. It’s up to you whether you cooperate or hoard the best loot! And for fans of modes like CoD Zombies or Resident Evil’s Mercenaries, there’s also a wave-based challenge to enjoy.
When you actually play The Left Behind, you’ll notice it’s similar to games like Dying Light and DayZ. Fans of DayZ will recognize the way you explore and search for items, as well as the combat and how the game is viewed. Every building can be entered and searched, but be warned: some have unique challenges and tough zombies. You’ll really need to be prepared when night falls. While there aren’t the fast, flying Volatiles from Dying Light, you’ll face large groups of zombies that move quickly. And along with the undead, you’ll also encounter wildlife, though it’s unknown if these animals are infected or not.
Okay, so in this game, The Left Behind, you’re constantly fighting zombies – bashing them with bats or shooting them, whatever works. But it’s not just about combat; you’ve gotta keep an eye on your hunger, thirst, and health. That means every scrap of loot you find actually matters! You might need a bottle of water just as much as more bullets. The good news is, the game description says we’ll be unlocking new weapons – both ranged and melee – as we play, so there’s a real sense of getting stronger. I’m not sure how we’ll unlock them yet – maybe through leveling up, finding blueprints to craft stuff, or exploring new areas – but it sounds awesome. Plus, the developers are promising a really detailed world to explore, a story to uncover, different ways to play, and tons of weapons and enemies. Honestly, it sounds like The Left Behind could be a fantastic co-op game for a group of four friends.
