New PlayStation 5 Console Exclusive May Be Dead on Arrival

Highlights

  • Beta tests suggest upcoming PS5 console exclusive game Concord may struggle to attract players, with low interest on PC.
  • Despite good gameplay and visuals, Concord’s $40 price tag and PSN account requirement hinder potential success.
  • Swap to a free-to-play model could be key to Concord’s success, but maybe good word-of-mouth could help it build a player base.

As a dedicated gamer who has had the privilege of participating in the beta tests for the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive game, Concord, I have to admit that my initial excitement for this hero-shooter title has been dampened by the lackluster response it has received thus far. The graphics and gameplay are undeniably impressive, with an aesthetic reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy and solid gunplay and intense fights that keep me engaged.

The forthcoming exclusive game for PlayStation 5 named Concord, which was unveiled towards the end of May, might struggle to attract players based on beta test results. This hero-shooter game shares similarities with Blizzard’s Overwatch. Featuring remarkable graphics and an aesthetic influenced by Guardians of the Galaxy, Concord delivers an enjoyable gaming experience with excellent gunplay, thrilling battles, and a diverse cast of characters each possessing unique abilities. As someone who has extensively played the beta version, I can vouch for its quality.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed trying out the Concord beta tests myself, yet it appears that the game hasn’t managed to generate much excitement among the gaming community. The number of players on PS5 is uncertain, but there seems to be a lack of interest in the PC version. According to SteamDB, the peak concurrent player count on Steam was only 2,388, which is disappointing given that the latest test was open to everyone, regardless of whether they had pre-ordered or not. It’s possible that Concord has done better on PlayStation, but we don’t have any data indicating that at present.

The original Concord beta was only available to those that either pre-ordered the game or had a PlayStation Plus account handy. Considering these restrictions, it’s not all that surprising it wasn’t played by that many PC gamers. However, the second Concord beta was completely free and even came with an extra map and mode that weren’t available in the original test. The fact that PC gamers still couldn’t be bothered to play Concord is troubling, especially since the game is a multiplayer-only live-service title that will live and die by its player count. If PC gamers weren’t willing to try Concord while it was free, it seems hard to believe that they will decide to commit $40 to buying the game come its August 23 launch.

Concord’s Player Count on PC Hasn’t Been Great

Although being a live-service game, Concord carries a $40 price tag, an expensive choice for some. Adding to the concern, PC gamers need a PlayStation account to play it. These factors combined may explain why some in the gaming community are choosing to overlook Concord. Moreover, the character designs have faced harsh criticism, further deterring potential players. It’s unfortunate that many are reluctant to give Concord a chance based on these factors alone. I believe that if people experienced the game firsthand, they might find themselves enjoying it. The challenge lies in drawing those hesitant players in.

Based on the strong response to its beta trials, it seems uncertain if Concord will take flight. Transitioning to a completely free-to-play model could potentially save the game, but without significant changes, it’s challenging to envision substantial success. Word of mouth might expand Concord’s fanbase, yet as an ardent beta tester, my concern lies in its potential short lifespan.
