New Pokemon Shorts Releasing Weekly on YouTube

New Pokemon Shorts Releasing Weekly on YouTube

Key Takeaways

  • First of eight Poketoons out now, with new episodes every Wednesday.
  • Shorts are cute and simple, meant to make fans smile.
  • Previous Poketoons from 2020 still available on Pokemon YouTube.

As a gamer with a heart full of nostalgia for the good old days of Pokemon, the release of these new Poketoons has filled me with an uncontainable excitement that only a Gen-Z kid can understand! Growing up with the original series, I’ve always appreciated the simple yet charming aspects of Pokemon and its universe, and these short animated videos are a perfect reminder of that.

Beginning this week, a fresh set of Pokemon-themed short videos has started streaming on YouTube. Each Wednesday for the next eight weeks, a new episode will be made available, completely free for viewing. These shorts are reminiscent of those released in 2020 and can still be watched on the official Pokémon YouTube channel.

The news was posted on the official Japanese Pokémon X (formerly Twitter) page when the first of the animated shorts was released earlier this week. A small update was also made to the Japanese Pokémon website explaining the idea behind the new animation shorts. They are called Poketoons, using the English word “cartoon” combined with, of course, “Pokémon.”

The First of Eight Poketoons is Available Now

Seven More Shorts Are Coming

The first Poketoon is already available to watch on the Japanese Pokémon YouTube channel now. It is only 51 seconds long, so don’t go in expecting a full-length episode. As Poketoons are free for anyone to watch, they are just simple, cute stories meant to make fans smile rather than provide any important lore or story. The first one is also optimized for watching on a cell phone rather than a computer or a TV, so it is meant to be enjoyed as a quick pick-me-up wherever you are.

Title translation: “Pawmi-Pawmo-Pawmot!

The official Pokemon website describes the series as (translated),

[Poketoons are] a web anime series featuring various Pokémon.

The videos range from short vertical videos to horizontal-shaped ones that everyone can enjoy.

There will be a lineup of various stories!

Please look for your favorite videos.

Indicates that while subsequent videos might be longer than the initial one, their purpose is still meant for amusement without any significant drama attached. These vertical videos could potentially contain more material, or simply be extended in length, but they’ll most likely continue to offer a lighthearted and entertaining experience.

Previous Pokemon Animated Shorts

This Isn’t the First Time Pokemon Has Done This

Previously, Pokémon has made it a practice to distribute a series of short videos for free viewing, not the first instance. The most recent batch started airing in 2020, referred to as “Poketoons,” on their dedicated YouTube channel for kids, the “Pokémon” channel. The inaugural episode was titled “Scraggy and Mimikyu,” aired in June 2020, with “Hero ni Naritai Yanchamu” (Pancham Who Wants to Be a Hero) and “Yume no Tsubomi” (Dreaming Tsubomi) following suit in May and June of the next year, after a considerable break.

Following the release of “Mattete ne Kooking” (Just Wait, Magikarp) in July 2021, we had “Poka-Poka MaguMaggu House” (Cozy Slugma House) in August 2021, “Gengar ni Nacchatta!?” (I Became a Gengar?!) in September 2021, “Fubuki no Natsu Yasumi” (Summer Vacation Blizzard) in October 2021, and lastly “Purin no Uta” (Jigglypuff’s Song) aired in December 2021. All the videos containing dialogue were provided with English subtitles since the original dialogues were spoken in Japanese.

The international Pokemon YouTube channel currently has the previously released shorts available for viewing, and you can find them by searching for the episode titles provided. Unlike before where a new short was released once a month, the upcoming series will be published weekly over the next eight weeks. This means that while episodes might be shorter in length, you won’t have to wait as long between releases. Keep an eye out for the latest Poketoons every Wednesday!
