A fresh survey has disclosed the heart-rending role-playing games (RPGs) cherished by gamers throughout history, and it’s no shock that the Final Fantasy series is leading the way in terms of emotional impact. Countless gamers recall their most poignant RPG experiences as originating from the Final Fantasy universe, but a recent survey suggests that the admiration for heart-wrenching narratives spans across different sources.
While not every game with a moving story belongs to the Role-Playing Game (RPG) category, the extensive narrative elements found in most RPGs give writers the chance to touch players’ emotions deeply. Interestingly, it appears that fans have responded favorably by opting for games capable of stirring their feelings intensely, albeit painfully.
The Top 10 Saddest RPGs of All Time, Chosen By Players
- Final Fantasy 10 (498 votes)
- Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 (289 votes)
- Persona 3 (245 votes)
- Okami (211 votes)
- Mother 3 (208 votes)
- Tales of the Abyss (207 votes)
- Dragon Quest 11 (164 votes)
- Final Fantasy 9 (161 votes)
- Suikoden 2 (158 votes)
- Final Fantasy 15 (154 votes)
The survey was carried out by the Japanese gaming site Dengeki Faminico Gamer, gathering over 4,700 responses, representing at least 40 distinct games. “Final Fantasy 10” leads the pack, accounting for more than 10% of the total votes. Ever since its debut in 2001, the emotional journey of Tidus, as he explores his love story with Yuna and his complex bond with his father, who personifies Sin, has enthralled players, a fascination that remains vibrant 24 years on.
On that mountain, it’s not just one sad “Final Fantasy” game that stands out. In fact, three other sad games from the series made it into the top 10, with five more appearing in the top 40. Among these, “Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7” has earned the second place for most heart-wrenching RPGs, garnering 289 votes. “Final Fantasy 9” and “Final Fantasy 15” also put up impressive performances, securing eighth and tenth positions respectively. Other notable entries on the overall list include “Final Fantasy 14” in 16th place, “Final Fantasy Zero” in 19th, original “Final Fantasy 7” in 24th, “Final Fantasy 16” in 32nd, and “Final Fantasy 5” in 34th.
In terms of role-playing games not belonging to the “Final Fantasy” series, “Persona 3” stands out, with Okami Amaterasu from other popular games like “Okami” finishing in fourth place. The “Persona” series is known for its heavy emotional impact, and those who have completed “Persona 3” or its 2024 remake, “Persona 3 Reload”, are well-prepared to bring tissues as the endgame can be quite tearjerking. Other games in the top 10 include “Mother 3” in fifth place, “Tales of the Abyss” in sixth, “Dragon Quest 11” in seventh, and “Suikoden 2” in ninth position.
