New PS5 Pro Model is Out Now

Okay, so a new PlayStation 5 Pro is out now! From what I’ve read, it’s got a few upgrades over the original PS5 from earlier this year. It’s true Sony did raise the price of all the PS5s – the regular one, the Slim, and the Pro – by fifty bucks back in August. But honestly, these little improvements to the Pro might just be enough to get me to finally upgrade!

Even before its official announcement in September 2024, the PlayStation 5 Pro was widely anticipated, with rumors circulating as early as March 2024. Priced at $699 (recently increased to $749.99), the PS5 Pro boasts a significantly faster graphics processor, 2TB of storage space, and a cutting-edge AI technology called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution for enhanced image quality.

New And Improved PlayStation 5 Pro Model Is Out Now

Tech analyst Austin Evans recently shared a video showing that a new PlayStation 5 Pro (model number CFI-7121) is now available for sale. He carefully took apart the new console and compared it to the original PS5 Pro from last year, looking at things like weight, how loud it is, and how much power it uses.

Some key takeaways from Austin Evans’ report are as follows:

  • The new PS5 Pro model is slightly lighter, weighing almost 100g less
  • There’s a 3–4% improvement in energy consumption in the new PS5 Pro model
  • The new model is around 20% quieter and has a lighter noise tone

In a recent teardown video, Evans figured out why the new PS5 Pro is lighter. The 87-gram weight reduction comes from a lighter fan, power supply, and rear heat sink, plus a redesigned motherboard and a plastic fan grill—the original model used metal.

The upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro will include an updated DualSense controller, identified as model ‘CFI-ZCT2W’. However, according to Austin Evans, this new controller isn’t much different from the original. The main change is the removal of the built-in rear microphone. While some internal components, like the battery and motors, have been altered, reports suggest these changes don’t affect performance or the overall user experience.

Details about a new PS5 Pro console emerged in late September, but it appears the long-anticipated removable battery for the DualSense controller won’t be included.

In the end, Evans concludes that while the improvements in the 2024 PS5 Pro are interesting and appear good on paper, they aren’t significant enough to be truly game-changing.
