The new roguelike game, Mewgenics, had a very successful launch on Steam on February 10th. It quickly received positive reviews, and as of today, it’s being rated ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ on the platform. The developers have said the launch has been even better than they anticipated.
February was a packed month for video game releases, and Mewgenics launched on Steam amidst the flurry. Early in the month, Nioh 3 from Koei Tecmo became popular on Steam, with over 88,000 players online on February 8th – making it the most played game in the Nioh series on the platform, despite a few technical hiccups. The month will end with the release of Resident Evil Requiem on February 27th, the newest installment in Capcom’s well-known survival horror series.
Mewgenics Has Taken Steam By Storm
Even with many new games being released in February, Mewgenics has quickly become a hit with Steam players. Within hours of its February 10th launch, the game from Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel reached 65,893 concurrent players, according to SteamDB, and that number continued to grow. Mewgenics also received very positive reviews, with 96% of over 1,683 player reviews being positive. According to McMillen, the game sold more than 152,000 copies in its first few hours – over three times the launch sales of The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, which sold around 40,000 copies on its first day.
Mewgenics is a strategy game where you build the best possible cat army. You’ll explore challenging dungeons, breed cats with unique traits, and equip them with collars that act like RPG classes – such as Mage or Fighter – to unlock special abilities as they gain experience. When your cats return from their adventures, their skills and mutations are passed down, letting you create even stronger units for future expeditions. With so much control over your cats’ development, the combinations for building the perfect army are endless.
Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel previously collaborated on The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, a popular game known for its challenging but fair difficulty and diverse gameplay. Their latest project, Mewgenics, took seven years to develop, beginning after they regained the rights to the game’s intellectual property. Originally conceived as a follow-up to Super Meat Boy, the project was canceled by its initial developer before McMillen and Glaiel revived it.
Mewgenics Has Already Exceeded Expectations
Despite high expectations from fans, the developers were surprised by how quickly Mewgenics became popular. Glaiel stated the launch was exceeding their predictions, performing better than any of the previous Isaac expansions within just a few hours. McMillen confirmed that Mewgenics had the best single-day sales of any game he’s created. For comparison, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth reached its highest player count of 70,701 a year after it was released in 2014.
With the popularity of games like The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and other roguelikes, Mewgenics is a game that players can easily spend hundreds of hours perfecting their cat army to achieve victory. Mewgenics has launched successfully on Steam, but it remains to be seen if it can maintain this positive momentum over the coming weeks and months.
