New Sci-Fi Survival Game is Coming to Steam Next Month

Horizon Journey is a new survival adventure game that combines elements of both No Man’s Sky and The Forest. Both of those popular indie games found success on Steam, attracting similar players despite taking place in very different worlds. Like No Man’s Sky, Horizon Journey features worlds created using procedural generation, giving players a sense of vastness as they explore planets, scan plants and animals, build bases, and try to survive in challenging environments.

I absolutely love The Forest! It’s a survival horror game where you play as the only person who survives a plane crash, and you end up lost in a forest… filled with cannibals! It’s a lot like No Man’s Sky in that you spend a ton of time building up a base and crafting weapons. You need to, because these cannibals are seriously dangerous, and the game really puts you on edge with limited resources and constant threats. Every encounter feels like a fight for your life!

Upcoming Sci-Fi Survival Game Is Reminiscent of No Man’s Sky and The Forest

Redivided Studios is launching its sci-fi survival game, Horizon Journey, into early access on Steam on January 30th. Set on Mars in the year 2053, the game puts players in the role of the Endeavor-17 mission, tasked with building a new colony for humanity. Players will need to gather resources, craft items, modify equipment, reshape the Martian landscape, and construct buildings using a modular building system – similar to the exploration and building found in No Man’s Sky.

In this story-focused adventure, players – whether playing alone or with others – will begin by exploring a 4 square kilometer area of Mars. They’ll need to carefully manage their oxygen, health, hunger, and thirst while doing so. As they play Horizon Journey, players will investigate the wreckage of previous missions to find useful materials. They’ll also face challenges like dust storms and radiation, and encounter unexpected threats hidden below the surface.

The creators of Horizon Journey have painstakingly built the Mars environment to be as realistic as possible, using actual photos and data from NASA. They’ve even tried to match the lighting to what it’s really like on Mars. The game won’t just look like the red planet, though; it will also present players with changing dangers and challenges, making the environment feel alive and reactive.

The game will initially launch in early access, letting players experience the main story and learn how to play. You’ll get to build your colony, craft tools, and face the challenges of the planet. Over time, the developers plan to expand the world beyond the starting area of 4 square kilometers, ultimately creating a large, open world with more complex colony-building options.

I recently checked out Horizon Journey, and honestly, it feels like a good taste of what’s coming in The Forest 3. I was super hyped when Endnight Games announced at The Game Awards that the new game will be set on an alien planet crawling with mutants! It’s a big change from the woods of the first two games, which is really exciting. While we wait for the official release (they haven’t given a date yet!), I’m gonna try out Redivided Studios’ Horizon Journey in early access next month to tide me over. It might not be The Forest 3, but it’ll scratch that survival horror itch for a bit!
